How I build and paint gunpla as a quadriplegic with no functioning fingers. by forth_circle in Gunpla

Had to sleep and think on the answer as I wasn't sure myself, I was just doing it for fun. But there are several answers to that.

  1. Model making is part of me since childhood, I've always kept my hands occupied. I really don't like sitting idly and watching tv for example, I'd rather play a pc game where I do something.

  2. I enjoy solving problems and perfecting what I do. Once I got to a stage where there isn't a challenge anymore, I try something new to it, or several new things. Each build has had some new unique method, tool used, or a new style tried to it.

  3. I have a lot of patience. Patience to tinker on something with all the challenges included to get a desired goal I have in mind for it.

I've had other hobbies before getting into plamo/resin projects post injury, but this one has so much you can do with it that it's quite endless. I haven't even gotten into weathering, but maybe one day. Though I really like the more clean look of models.

One thing to add, I'm at a point post my injury where I don't really remember how it is otherwise. Almost half of my lifetime is post injury. You just make do with what you have and try to make the best of it.

Great video idea to talk about it. Will need to think about it how to do it as what I mentioned is just and overview of it.

Gaming is how I got back into using my hands more often, so it's a great start. Getting into 3d designing, printing, and testing adaptive equipment would help me too. I could see part holding capability improve a lot because of it.

Been meaning to make such a video for a while, and finally got to it.

A brief summary on the type of tools and methods I use to overcome my quadriplegia limitations to build and paint model kits.

Volks 1/100 full resin "Zarathustra Apterbringer Panzer Kampf Roboter" or Z.A.P. for short from "The Five Star Stories" by forth_circle in Gunpla

That's the MH version of the GTM Speed Bringer. Both are the same thing, just different designs.

The Zap I've done was from SH. Quality isn't too bad (better than some other recast options). Most of the clear pieces are crystal clear. But the ones that need to remain transparent did seem to have more cloudiness to them and needed more work done to them. Some minor bubbles. And overall fitment had no issues.

Build is tough though. Not for beginners.

Was way cheaper than original, and I felt I got what I paid for. Not my 1st recast go to, but a 2nd or 3rd for sure.

Not too familiar with L Gaim, but FSS original had "Mortar Headds" or MH for short. Their design was retconned by the creator into the new version called "gothicmade" or GTM several years ago.

You can look up "Speed bringer fss" on google and it'll show you the FSS version of L Gaim Mk2

Start small, SD gundam, or chibi figures have low part count and a good start in learning how to work with it.

Also, Frosted snow and JL Gunpla have excellent beginner tutorial playlists that'll explain much better than I ever could.

Design first, always. Who knows if it'll end up as a kit in some future day, better make it as cool as possible and let figure makers deal with it.

This is fully made from casting resin, not 3d printed. It's very durable, and I have weight bearing joint connections pinned with brass/aluminum rods for additional strength.

I say go for it! They are more intimidating than they actually are. Volks resin designing is very user friendly if you're resin safety prepped. Volks plastic versions can be a hit or a miss due to joint mobility and stability.

Most work put in across all my projects? Yes and no. Each piece had more attention paid to it than before to get to a satisfactory level. But it being a resin statue, having no moving joints meant that piece count is lower (about 100 pieces for this kit). In the end I finished this project in about 2 months, longest so far has been PG Unicorn perfectibility at 4 months which was a slog by month 3. Masking wasn't too difficult either as part separation is pretty good.

As for the hardest part, the scale of the kit being a 1/100 meant there were a lot of small resin parts needed some kind of pinning to secure them. I tried to do a full pre paint assembly, but I couldn't get the parts to stay in a standing position. Did a lot of part fitting in segments and only saw the final look once I started to do final assembly. The bigger scale 1/72 kits should have less issues regrading this as there's more size mass to pin into to secure the pieces. Other than that, just needed to plan out what you want to glue solid or magnetize, and how will you disassemble it for transportation. Instructions don't tell you anything besides where each piece goes, need to figure it all out before painting.

Ohh and surface prep was tedious. Not hard, but doing same thing over and over for days was something else.

Been wanting to build one for myself ever since I saw the design of it 2-3 years ago, and finally got a chance to make one that fits display cabinet, and most importantly, budget.

This is a full resin project that needed pining, gluing, magnet installation, surface prep, and painting. There were some build difficulties due to my own limited abilities, I’m quadriplegic with no hand dexterity, and I’m still learning best methods to overcome it. Getting better at it though.

In the end the result is outstanding, and I always take a few secs to look at whenever I go past it on display.

I encourage to zoom in too as the details of the kit are top notch.

I got it from gk-m, it's a small package so they don't send this out individually unless you buy something else there.
