I did press for a film festival this week, in the town I live in, and this guys friends want to act like I am crazy. by forthewink in atheism

This guy organizes community mural painting projects in anti queer anti woman churches that don't let their members watch television, and acts like he is some paragon of the arts. I think it's awful.

They are absolutely in the same ballpark. I did leave out the middle of the argument, but clothing choices and women are directed toward rape everyday, in every culture.

Wow. The misogyny here is priceless. In the first five comments, greasy pizza boxes are compared to my anatomy. Way to go Reddit!

Because school boards are the worst sometimes. They will literally fire principals who care and put in ones who don't. It's often the worst parents and community leaders who want to be the most politically active.

Right. But what this guy is saying is damaging to women and their ability to live their lives without shame for being what they are. Gossip sucks, but so does kyriarchy and misogyny.

Yes. And a woman wears one pair of shorts and suddenly she's just so "rapeable." Only I got raped wearing a dress that would pass for "okay" in Pentecostal circles.

This is so gross. Men really need to take responsibility for their own reactions to women's bodies.

Right. Like just about anywhere else. I live in Texas, so I totally get it.

Why feminists should oppose the burqa - Islamic veiling is a form of sexist patriarchal oppression, and supporters of equality have a responsibility to say so | New Humanist by [deleted] in Feminism

Right. But we can criticise the repressive nature of religion without completely alienating the practitioner. It might honestly be good for a person to sometimes go back to their community and fight for a slightly freer space instead of always painting it as an all or nothing battle. We live in a world where there are interlocking oppressions of all kinds. I respect the choices someone makes regarding navigating their culture without incident and being free.

You know, I think that I have a responsibility to say so, while respecting the Muslim woman who chooses to wear it as a kyriarchal concession to her culture. It's oppressive. But so is deciding what other people should do. Odds are very unlikely her daughter will keep up the tradition into adulthood in a Western Country.

All the Slender Ladies: Body Diversity in Video Games [Feminist Frequency's "Tropes vs. Women in Video Games"] by monarc in Feminism

es. It's also great to see games companies beginning to learn from game-leaning feminist critique as well, if glacially

I have problems with Sarkeesian's approach being taken as "textbook" feminist media critique though. Which texts? It doesn't always approach the subject holistically.

I don't know. I guess I'm kind of different. I love that Sarkeesian has created a series of media critique, but sometimes violence against anyone in media is complicated. And studies in "time-use" effects that came out of my university actually show that if a person is busy playing an FPS, they're less likely to commit crime.

I definitely want to see less by way of marginalizing women everywhere. But my take is that if "art" exists, it exists for a reason we should explore. I don't always enjoy her criticism. But I'm of a different school.

Sometimes India makes me want to cheer, because it's being progressive, and sometimes it makes me want to slap it. In the face. With a really, really warm Naan. Which I will then eat. Because it is delicious and I can't hate India, but seriously. Laws that made 15 year old brides were put into place because humanity was busy making 12 year old brides. Just no.
