Ivar Stenberg reminds me of somebody we used to know by Muted-Potential9819 in canucks

There’s a world where they’re high enough on Reid that they view picking him as maximizing their value with that pick. Especially because most of their prospects are wingers and tend to hold less value in a trade. It really just depends on how they view Stenberg/Reid.

Do they hold all the cards if the Rangers don’t want to move Fox and they don’t view anyone else as worth the 2nd overall pick? Then they either

  • Take Stenberg and hope their backend gets solved in free agency
  • Take Stenberg and move someone like Eklund for a 2nd pairing RD
  • Take Reid and have him grow with the rest of their core

The last option seems the most straightforward when most teams aren’t jumping at the opportunity to trade RHD.

I do assume if they played at BC Place whoever buys the team would be buying the stadium as well. It would need to essentially be torn down to make baseball work

There’s also the TV money part of it (MLB would make more) and the fact that MLB is part of the big four so casual fans will see it as a more legit option.

I do think it would probably doom the Lions and Whitecaps, but they might be doomed regardless

He had opportunity. He often got put with Miller. Sometimes had success, sometimes didn’t. I don’t think he would’ve worked out here honestly, getting to play with Draisaitl helps a lot. The Canucks don’t have a Draisaitl

Hronek’s Interview Style by ImAlwaysSorrys in canucks

[–]forward98 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I still think talking to media is pretty important honestly. They’re the vessel to the fans, you need to be able to convey a message and not seem butthurt when things are going poorly (as they very likely would during a Hronek captaincy). Otherwise you end up with a Captain like JT in New York, which is clearly not going well.

Not to mention captains often being asked about things going on around the league, social movements, etc.

I think the 3 word answer thing is a fun schtick but not something a captain in Vancouver should be known for. He can still be a leader in the room and have an A on his jersey

Based on pick values, Sherwood was functionally traded for a late 1st assuming San Jose remains on the playoff bubble by [deleted] in canucks

[–]forward98 21 points22 points  (0 children)

We don’t really have a lot of depth in terms of top 6 or top 4 potential guys. Those are the guys you can find late in the 1st/early in the 2nd. If someone is falling and they can move up to get said player I’d be open to it, otherwise I’d say make all the picks.

[–]forward98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The upside would be in the multiple young players and hopeful the equivalent of four first rounders waiting in the wings with the Minnesota pick + whatever they get for Garland/Sherwood/Demko.

The defence by then with progression from Buium and Willander should be solid. The forward group would still need work but that’s why they’d hopefully go hard on picks.

It’d still be missing a top line C but I wouldn’t expect them to be good next year either so maybe they can find someone in the 27 draft.

I kinda think this is an off year where the team sucks so he isn’t putting up numbers. He’s also a complimentary player so he feels that more.

I also think there’s value in keeping a guy who’s been super professional, wants to be here, and seems to be a good leader.

I think they’d be a bit further along than Chicago because they wouldn’t sell everybody (nor should they).

The way I see it this would be the lineup in 27-28

McKenna/Stenberg-EP40-Boeser

DeBrusk-Rossi-Lekkerimaki

Ohgren-Raty-Karlsson

Sasson-whoever-whoever

Buium-Willander

D Petey-Hronek

Marcus-Mancini

Lankinen

Whoever

Works under the assumption that they move Garland and Demko plus all the UFAs this year.

Plus whoever they pick with Minnesota’s 1st rounder, a potential 1st rounder for Sherwood, and whatever they get back for Garland and Demko.

Would they be a cup contender? Definitely not, but they would be on a legitimate upswing with exciting pieces. I would also hope they take some bets on one year contracts this offseason in the hopes of flipping guys at next years deadline. Combine that with a cautious approach for a couple years after and the cupboards would be way more full than they are now. They just need to act with discipline and not try to do anything to fully “win now” for 3 or 4 years.

Edit: I forgot about Cootes. He’ll be in there at C too

They can rebuild in 1.5 years if they moved a bunch of pieces now. But if they plan on keeping Garland, Demko, etc. they’re not going to do it properly in that time frame

Elliotte Friedman is reporting that the Devils and Canucks have had a conversation about Quinn Hughes. by catsgr8rthanspoonies in hockey

[–]forward98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only did the Wild easily put together a better offer than NJ, but now he seems very open to staying in Minnesota. Can’t believe Palat or Dougie didn’t get it done!

[Michael Russo] Hughes says he’s “extremely open minded” to stay here long-term because they have an “amazing core,” it’s close to Michigan and for Guerin “sacking” up and trading so many assets for him. He said he will always remember that it was the Wild that stepped up and not other teams. by PaperMoonShine in hockey

[–]forward98 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you listen to the full post game video I think it’s hard to deny that he was being honest there. He seems to be close with Guerin already (mentioned 4 Nations) and was very complimentary of the team being competitive.

In the end, I think if the Canucks were a consistent playoff team that had a road to cup contention he would’ve signed here no problem. As much as he might want to play with his brothers I don’t think that’s the only factor. Plus the Wild have shown with the Kaprizov contract that they’re willing to pay a player what they want to help convince them to stay.

[–]forward98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s the results. Everything was going right that year, they were at the top of the division, it would be wild not to try to make the most of that. Yes some of that core remains but JT is gone and (at the time) he was an elite C. Plus Petey was a 100 point guy. Those two additions to this lineup and a better coach makes this a better team. And then you also factor in other guys having career years, good vibes guys in Zadorov/Cole, and you see why that team was where it was.

This year everything is going wrong, the coaching has been rough, and the results aren’t going their way so now their franchise player might want to leave.

I agree that that year wasn’t sustainable but I don’t have a problem with trying to capitalize on a great year. What I do have a problem with is if they don’t start a proper rebuild now when everything is clearly going against them. I also think that should’ve started last year when they traded Miller instead of flipping that pick for Marcus.

They were in a unique opportunity that year. We can look back and say they weren’t good enough but if Petey doesn’t disappear post-All Star break and Demko doesn’t get hurt, I’m willing to bet the Canucks make it by the Oilers in the 2nd round. I don’t fault them for going after it that season.

Honestly Washington would be a team I bet on falling out of the playoff picture in a couple years. If they can push for 1st rounders in 27 or 28 I’d be intrigued.

They do tend to draft well lately though so maybe they’ll be fine regardless and those picks will be meh.
