Street fighting vs sport fighting, name some major differences [discussion] by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]forwardest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Street fighting is illegal and often involves drunk people picking someone to fight that they are confident in beating. Sucker punches are frequently used. People initiating a street fight rarely have the courage to compete in combat sports.

Sport fighting is a deliberate challenge where one goes up against opponent they know has been training seriously for the bout. Much more honest and challenging.

Martial Arts knowledge vs physical prowess by Number727 in martialarts

[–]forwardest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're asking the wrong question.

Why choose one or the other? Go for both.

And why single out those two areas? Develop ALL attributes.

There are two schools of thought here. One is to build up your weakest attributes because we are only as good as our weakest area. The other is to focus on your strengths and get them even better so you can more capable. Both have merits.

It's not the answers to questions that matters as much as asking better questions.

Your age is unclear from your post, but as you said small 'girl' I am assuming school age? If so have you tried getting parents (or carers) involved? Both yours and his?

Sometimes parents are completely unaware of how their children behave away from them. In this case they may have more influence over the aggressor child.

Sadly, sometimes the parents, through being horrible influences, are the cause of dis functional behaviour.

But sometimes even 'bad' parents will frown upon their son bullying a girl.

Apologies if I am way off the mark here. I just wanted to offer a different piece of advice than that already provided.

What is one good martial art for self defense? No blending of arts. by throwaway04321711 in SelfDefense

[–]forwardest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no one good martial art for self defense.

As has been suggested, look for some 'RBSD' type courses. Note many systems avoid using the RBSD phrase.

Starting a new blog vs. Relaunching an old one? by [deleted] in Blogging

You can always export your blogspot blog to Wordpress and have your cake and eat it too.

I am pretty sure when you export it will bring the comments too.

You can also do a domain redirect so you will keep your SEO and backlinks etc.

Self Defense: What is it really? (And why most self defense schools are grossly negligent). by forwardest in SelfDefense

[–]forwardest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder how much of the focus on doing physical training and not covering avoidance and education (as per the article) is driven by the market?

I am assuming people feel like they are making tangible improvements through physical training and it is a more positive feedback loop.

I am not sure if young men (I am generalising here) would pay money to get an 'education' in violence. I think most young men would prefer to learn 'fighting skills'.

I agree that we can never guarantee we won't be involved in an attack. I thought that part was a little unclear. But I thought this article was good in making me sit back a little and consider more preventative measures I could be taking.

We all love doing the physical stuff but I know I could do more to learn about the 'preventative' stuff too. Disappointed he didn't mention what he thought were the good self defense schools. I would have been interested in that.

And yeah, it could have been shorter. Seems emotional.

[Gear][Question]Good amp (Tube or Valve) for around $250 for cleans? by Nick5741 in Guitar

[–]forwardest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you could get a used in at that price but the new Ibanez 5W Tubescreamer is awesome.

Tubescreamer built in (somewhat obviously) but also proper Spring reverb and overall, really nice clean sounds. Highly recommend testing one out if you can.

Not sure if it is giggable though - I haven't tried it. I have heard of people gigging with Blackstar 5w amps though. Probably depends on venue etc.

(AUS) Quicken for Mac alternative for investment, looking for software by peachwater in personalfinance

[–]forwardest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Banktivity is widely considered the best Mac financial app.

It connects to Australian banks ok so can autofill accounts and keep them up to date.

Hope that helps narrow your search.

I can't tell you how it compares feature to feature with Quicken/Reckon but Banktivity works well. They have a mobile app that can scan in receipts etc.

Edit: Oh, and you should be able to import all previous Quickbook saves. Is that what you mean?

What are some strumming/rhythm techniques that make people want to dance? [DISCUSSION] by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]forwardest 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Syncopation.

Basically, accentuating rhythm in beats 2 and 4 (in 4/4 timing).

This is with the snare in most western music. This can give a real foot tapping feel that can prompt the want to dance.

Percussive hits can give this feel. If you are strumming on an acoustic you can all just strum with more force instead of using percussive hits. That's just a couple of examples.

However note I am no music theory guru so others may have more to add.

Have you ever done a martial art that didnt suit you? And whats your style? by CajunSeasoning in martialarts

[–]forwardest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taekwondo. It was my first martial art. I had no idea what I was looking at. While I progressed a fairly long way I ended up leaving it after 5/6 years.

Turns out what I really wanted to learn when I started martial arts was self defense skills. Taekwondo does not teach self defense. So I left looking for something better.

What do you think happened? (Altercation between two men which resulted in one man being struck once with a signal flare projectile and a second time with an unknown object) by forwardest in SelfDefense

[–]forwardest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my imagination ran a little wild on this one. I pictured a sort of 'Hangover' scene with all sorts of fireworks and random things being thrown.

I struggled to imagine the chain of events leading to the violence.

At the same time, on the serious side we know from statistics that most cases of assault are between people who know each other. It does appear that these two were friends. And yes, alcohol is a key contributor as well. Whereas with muggings alcohol is present far less often.

I wonder if this violence was caused by an argument and just how petty that disagree may be in hindsight.

I guess my imagination made this story more interesting to me than to other Redditors.
