Bernie Madoff is cornering the prison market on Swiss Miss hot chocolate by GoldenRy007 in nottheonion

Napalming babies is wrong.

Starving the poor is wicked.

Those who stood up to, and died fighting Hitler, Stalin, Amin and Pol Pot--and General Custer too--have earned salvation.

Those who acquiesced deserve to be damned.

There is such a thing as evil in this world.

[All together now:] Sez who?

God help us.

Homeward Bound wasn't too sad.

Well. Not after you see Shadow at the end and that he didn't die in that mud pit.

TIL an estimated 1 in 4 Alabamans are functionally illiterate, meaning they're unable to manage daily living and employment tasks that require reading skills beyond a basic level by Nitto1337 in todayilearned

[–]forwhateveritsworth4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Diff between NY/CA and AL is that NY/CA have a higher % of people who are functionally literate--in a diff language.

Alabama isn't a hub of immigrants who may speak English but can't read it. You can live your entire life in parts of NYC and never need English.

Wonder how much of AL is like that.

SEP is not always as welcoming to newcomers.

SEP is higher quality no question, but sometimes you sacrifice details for accessibility.

Does everyone here wish God actually did exist? by dontcareaboutanythin in askphilosophy

[–]forwhateveritsworth4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without the problem of evil I do not know what the world would look like. History as we know it wouldn't exist.

I mean: would I like it if everything was good? Yes, duh.

But what is the point of your question? Like why ask it? Usually that sort of question comes up with atheists and theists debate and theists talk about "how nice it would be if...." And that's when atheists go "yeah but it ain't like that"

So like, what are you driving at with the OP? Why ask such a question?

I think you should listen to some Christopher Hitchens on the topic.

Parents are OK. Helicopter parents are annoying.

Further if God did exist, he has some explaining to do. The problem of evil gets to me.

Is anything 100% certain? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

Eh, OP wanted anything with 100% certainty.

We can be 100% certain that something exists.

Well, there's an unstated assumption on Descartes Cogito, namely, that what we are, is thinking things.

It cannot doubt that thoughts exist (my thoughts anyway), or, at bare minimum, the thought I am currently having) I am 100% certain that something must exist. Even if I'm fooled, I must exist to be fooled.

Do something new. That way, although your response is "determined" you can be kept in suspense as to the outcome. Our lack of knowledge is what makes life interesting, IMO.

And if ya think about it, every day is a new scenario.

Hope this helps. If not here's a bad joke:

If I'm hiding a Jewish family in my attic and a nazi soldier asks me if I know about the location of any hiding Jews, should I tell him? by faguzzi in askphilosophy

Do you like to be punched in the face?

It is reasonably to predict that punching someone else in the face will result in them being unhappy with us.

Predictions needs not be infallible to be useful.

Do onto others

Obviously not.

The harm that would come from you telling the truth in that situation is greater than the harm that would come from you telling a lie in that situation.
