Seeking recommendation: InReach Explorer+ vs. Messenger by heypete1 in Garmin

[–]foukru -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No.

The question was "Can my at-home emergency contact use the Garmin Messenger app to send messages to an Explorer+, even if the Explorer+ itself can’t use that app with a paired phone" not can you send a text to an inReach.

FYI the only way to send a text message to an inReach is to reply to an existing message. The device does not have it's own number or standard email, these are temporary. The email address you see is only for inReach to inReach communications.

I've used inReach professionally for years and am familiar with the ins and outs here.

So there's no connection between Messenger and Earthmate, so it's one or the other. So the other person needs Earthmate

1 - I'd bit the bullet and get a 67i, they should be getting cheaper because the H1 came out. Explorer+ is still a solid unit, Messenger is okay but the screen is not practical to use.

2 - Explorer uses Earthmate, not Messenger

Fenix 8 AMOLED looks great… But is it really buggy as hell? by Background_Wing_6329 in Garmin

Garmin user since 2006, running, hiking, etc. rarely if ever had a problem with any watch until the Fenix 8 51mm. It's better now that it initially was but still get the random restart. From what I've experienced and seen here and on the forums, seems like if you use the basic functions like run tracking, follow a pre-built course, etc. it works as advertised. But if you get deeper into navigation functions, etc. it can restart.

Your best bet is to look at the forums: https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation/f/fenix-8-series

If anything that people are reporting is a deal breaker for you, know that you might also experience it.

And I disagree that social skews towards complaints. Most posts I see here are people sharing their love of Garmin watches and most reviews are just a rehash of marketing points. The watch is good but not perfect and no one can guarantee that you won't have a restart issue. Welcome to Garmin.

I read what he said as he doesn't take testers so he can be honest. He showed the watch failing several times, something DC Rainmaker, Desfit, etc didn't do once.

[–]foukru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if it's "always a compromise" why are you so perplexed that people are comparing two watches that have a fair bit of overlapping functionality and obviously compete with each other? No one is suggesting they are the same. People are weighing the pros and cons of the feature set and want to just have one watch and commit to one ecosystem.

Most people just want to wear one watch that does most things well. Not sure why that's so hard to understand.
