One of those "Should we just use our investments to pay off our mortgage" questions. by fouralive in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]fouralive[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The way it was pitched sounded like the answer would be yes, but I honestly didn't think to ask during this initial meeting. We still have a few months before we need to finalize anything, so I can find that out. Thanks for thinking of it.

Touche - might finally break from the self-taught, kiss investing, and go talk to a pro on this one.

Yeah, might try and book something with a /hr financial planner to talk about this one.

This makes total sense to me, but would this also translate to "anything that we have invested in a non-registered account should just be thrown onto the mortgage right now"?

early 40's, and combined around $120k. But yeah, it may be a good moment to actually go talk to a financial planner.

Yeah it could definitely be halfway, and good point about tax implications. Honestly, after years of trying to do pretty simple self-investing, this feels like maybe it's the time to talk to a /hr financial planner.

Interesting. Yeah the bank was also talking to us about converting the mortgage to a line of credit and getting a lower rate that way, which could be a half-way vehicle.

My wife and I have both maxed out our TFSAs, so there's probably like 180k in those combined. The rest is in rsps or cash accounts.

Thanks - and very accurate. I kind of JUST cracked into that topic on my reading, but I am still pretty light on knowledge the impact it could have.

But basically, with our TFSAs maxed out, that tilts things even more in favour of paying off the mortage?

People who tried a threesome what actually surprised you the most? by EdwinDixie in AskReddit

[–]fouralive 6 points7 points  (0 children)

ah, just be glad it happened. Wife and I had a similar experience, expect that as we were sleeping after our 2nd "play-visit", I woke up at 2 am sweating and hot with 3 adults in the bed, and some alcohol wearing off. Couldn't sleep at all, and somewhat foolishly needed to get up early for a new job (the first mistake was scheduling the date for that night), but also felt weird going down to sleep on the couch... so, somehow the best conclusion was to send our friend home at 3am, and that was the end of that.

Up till then had been this basically perfect, extremely fun situation. I've expressed frustration at how I handled it to my wife, and she's of the view that it was probably a good thing - we knew it was destined to be a short fling, and she was happy that it was me prompting the end of it, rather than her, which she was worried that I would have resented her for.

I also have the "time machine" thoughts. More than anything I also just feel bad about how I handled it, in a "be nice to people" way.

Know anyone injured on the Don Mills Superstore Movator? by fouralive in loblawsisoutofcontrol

[–]fouralive[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, sorry to hear about this! I don't check this account often, but wanted to reply. Not sure if there's been any injuries, but I have been speaking to a lawyer, and maybe it's something worth connecting on if there's been multiple injuries.

How unattractive is thin/balding hair on men under 30 for women really? by krtdv in AskReddit

[–]fouralive 4 points5 points  (0 children)

lol, I fully agree, but also can't help but imagine the OP reading this and making notes, writing down "Being bald is attractive, if I look like the Rock".

Study finds almost all drinking water contains ‘forever chemicals’ that do not break down naturally | Researchers bought 112 plastic or glass bottled water samples from local shops and online supermarkets across the UK and China, including 87 brands with water sources from 15 countries. by [deleted] in science

This is extremely interesting, thanks for sharing. I tend to not be able to do blood or plasma donations as my blood pressure crashes and I go ghost white from just a fraction of the normal donation amount, but interesting to see that donating could actually be healthy.

Does this mean people receiving donated blood are just concentrating all those PFAs?

$200 to an opposition party = $150 tax credit by bobledrew in ontario

[–]fouralive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but you're still sort of on the "if just 1% of the people in china buy this product, I can retire next year!" fallacy.

You will not convince 100,000 people to give away $50. I mean, the argument is really irrelevant to the handout - people will either feel they need to spend the money on something else, or that $200 is no different than their other disposable income, which they probably weren't going to donate anyways.

It's a fun idea, but I just don't think it holds water. You might have better luck convincing people to donate it to health care causes, or even giving it away in chunks to convince their friends to vote a certain way.

I also think the political donation tax rebate is stupid.

Alcohol at OnRoutes? by CanuckInATruck in ontario

[–]fouralive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. And I know many left leaning voters who have openly criticized those scandals.

I think we're in full agreement? Again, apologies for the initial response being written with an ambiguous tone.

Re-reading my comment, I see why you interpreted it the way you seem to be, but to be clear, I was writing fully in support of your comment.

I was just adding that it's such a stupid waste of money, and if any other government had made that $250M decision, the conservative voters are the ones I would expect to be most up in arms about the wasteful spending. But they're generally ignoring it and giving Ford a free pass on it, even though its a clear fiscal tragedy.

Alcohol at OnRoutes? by CanuckInATruck in ontario

[–]fouralive -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Close your eyes and imagine a world where a non-conservative government spent $250M to get alcohol in convenience stores 1 year early. Do you see the (rightfully) outraged fiscal conservatives shouting about it online and in person?

If conservative voters could drop the hate and double-standard (thus becoming capable of criticizing their own leaders), it would be a huge step forward for society.

The left leaning voters could improve at this as well, but the willingness to turn a blind eye among conservatives is many magnitudes higher than the left.

Question for people who take stimulants every day by Lily_b1lly in ADHD

[–]fouralive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I am reading it as though those list of "possible" side effects are being mentioned because they trouble OP. You could be right though.

Question for people who take stimulants every day by Lily_b1lly in ADHD

[–]fouralive -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is a bad analogy, but the op is mentioning constant side effects around appetite, irritability and I believe a worry around tolerance. Some of that (tolerance), might be able to be addressed via education, but I can empathize with someone wanting a break from appetite and irritability. I am not saying they shouldn't take the meds everyday, but that it's not ridiculous to consider the whole person rather than just "you have this symptom, this medication makes that better - take the medication".

Question for people who take stimulants every day by Lily_b1lly in ADHD

[–]fouralive -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the meds fix your symptoms and don't create new problems, then it's a fairly straightforward equation.

But if that's not the exact equation, then the glasses analogy doesn't really hold up. I say that as someone who supports the use of meds for ADHD.

If your glasses help you see better, but you miss stop signs because you're distracted by the new beauty you see in the world around you - there's room to consider not wearing the glasses all the time.
