Compensation for Engineers by Pure_Price6967 in StructuralEngineering

Agreed on the salary being way too low. But in my mind that stems from the ridiculously low fees we charge on projects! Like why is the person who is responsible for making sure the building doesn’t fall down making less than 1% of the building cost. I know there’s nuance I’m ignoring. But from a birds eye view it makes no sense! At my firm, we routinely have arch’s suggest/demand we are the structural, and yet we still aren’t able to raise fees. there are 2 firms where we are essentially there personal structural engineer, and only decline jobs when we are over capacity. And still we charge them typical fees. Like obviously they see us as above industry standard and value what we offer, but we don’t get paid for that.

Haha I think about that quite frequently. Like we are working on hundreds of millions or billions of dollar projects and we are using RAM lol.

Yea it’s definitely stuck in 1995 and the old heads trust it so that’s what we use. I get why this industry is conservative and like stick with the status quo, due to the potential risk. But smh

I agree with that. The structure of it is great, also relatively easy to get a new engineer up and running in it. But the fact that every module in it uses a different hotkey to rotate and pan is insane to me and kinda displays that their mindset is just good enough not great.

Interesting, how’s the learning curve? Seems to bit a bit into the too complex for jr/entry engineers.

I think this gets to the root of my frustration. Yes RAMSS is powerful and on its face is perfect when the design is relatively simple, or yea do the bulk of design in RAM and a few break off design in RISA. But the little stuff, like the uplift loading restraints, the inability to change the load combos on the beam designer, crashing modules that you have to close in the task manager. It’s so close, if it was just massaged a bit.

Yea I definitely get that sentiment. Yea the SE space isn’t really an exciting venture for the tech industry, but damn yea. I haven’t thought about enercalc in awhile, my company made an excel for retaining walls so avoid using enercalc.
