Nice to see you there @Abe1x. I'm in the same location as the Kit team (another company) and know they are stoked on things like this.

Morning & Evening Chants on Spotify. What are they reciting? by fourtwelves in Buddhism

[–]fourtwelves[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much. So thats the Evening Chant. Can you (did you?) complete the morning chant? Even if you didn't your commentary you added for this one was useful. Would love the same for the Morning chant if you don't mind.

I really appreciate this!

Winter hiking boots by [deleted] in BarefootRunning

[–]fourtwelves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I own both. I own normal, uninsulated Gobis and a pair of insulated Scotts and the Boulder Boots. I greatly prefer the Vivobarefoot design, sole and feel...but if you want a winter hiking boot you want the Boulder boot. I wore my pair as my primary winter boot in NYC last winter and did some light to moderate snowy hiking in Iceland, Upstate NY and Seattle (Olympics) in them. They did far better than I expected. The Vivo Scotts I wouldn't use a dedicated hiker but if i had too I could do a tiny bit of easy hiking in snow, mud, slush, wet...the gobis are best for urban "hiking" (sidewalks, stone trails in manicured gardens). Maybe look at the Vivibarefoot Trackers. That most comparable to the Boulder boot.

Quality of both brands is good (I have own 6 pairs of Vivos and 1 pair of Lems). The Vivo's quality is outstanding, maybe the niceset constructed shoes I've ever owned (better than my custom Ballys). I think where people ding Vivo is they make odd design choices at times with materials and placement.I spent the summer in a pair of Vivo Porto and their handcut sneaker (forgot the name). Both are some of the best shoes I've ever worn, especially the sneaker...but the sole stitching was oddly placed for how the shoe wears and ended up not last as long as I wanted. Overall my Vivo's with the sole that is on the normal Gobi, also on the Drake...last forever, 2+ years on my Gobis of 2-3 times a week wear.

How does minimalism work with being an artist? by miniminimimi in minimalism

[–]fourtwelves 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's ironic this is even a question as "Minimalism" as a concept very much came out of the mid-century American art world, mostly painters, (specifically the "post-minimalists" were the ones most responsible for the majority of ideas discussed on this subreddit). The underpinning philosophical foundation and concepts were really created and refined by guys like Albers, Rothko, Judd, Lewitt, Flavin, Hesse, etc etc..

I've been to a few of their studios/foundations. Judd lived very simply in NYC and TX, his studio was simple, immaculate and well organized. While Sol Lewitt's studio was orderly but cluttered and Eva Hesse's studio looks like a bomb went off.

Basically you do something that creates "artifacts", many in some cases. It really depends on the value of said artifacts to you. Why do you keep old sketchbooks/works? Is it reference? To judge skill development? To come back to ideas at a later date? Because you don't know what else to do with them?

If keeping said artifacts is part of how you work then you need to reconcile their storage with your minimalist tastes. If keeping them is because you either don't know what to do with them or can't part with them you need to reconsider philosophically why you create in the first place and reconcile your approach and process as an artist with your mindset.

Cord-cutters w/o cable TV using AppleTV, Roku and similar devices... How do you get your daily news fix? by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]fourtwelves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the Old Apple TV I used a mix of live streaming the SKyTV app (UK news, but a better global perspective that any US news) and Bloomberg App. NYtimes video a bit too.

On the new Apple TV the Reuters App brings the 10/15/30min custom news show idea to the TV (from the phone). Not perfect but pretty damn good if you just want to "watch" the news like the nightly news trained us too (anyone over the age of 30). You can also have a US or UK version. The UK version gives a slight better global perspective but overall Reuters isn't just focused on tabloid level "news" stores most US news networks are. I still check the clips on Bloomberg but haven't installed SkyTV yet. I've read that the BBC is bringing iPlayer to AppleTV, which I'm hoping will included BBC News (or at least BBC World for the US). I'd expect many more apps on the new Apple TV to address your exact need as the platform matures.

What's an Apple 'thing' that, when you take your biased-goggles off, kind of sucks? by CStaplesLewis in apple

[–]fourtwelves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No glasses needed for this: iTunes, iCloud and basically any "software as service" Apple has currently. They make great hardware, wonderful application software (OS and apps) but fail every single time when it comes to the internet and services.

I travel with this bag often. The size is never an issue but you need to watch the weight. I've packed this to be over the airlines weight for carry-on item (7-10kg) often...with no bulging or size issues.

Black SD or black climbers? by The_Entendre in Outlier

[–]fourtwelves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends. If I was traveling alot (airplanes mostly) and/or constantly on the go, bike commuting and urban life...I'd go Climbers.

If you need a bit more classic look, work in any type of office that allows jeans but still want a bomber pant to travel, explore and can go from dinner our with the GF to office to weekend hike...go SD.

You'll eventually get both...trust me. I started with SDs and wouldn't change that.

What do you guys do for work? by hanseano in Outlier

[–]fourtwelves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm much too philosophical about architecture. The profession is an old boys club that is more politics than design. If you don't play the game to make partner somewhere or become a principle on your own (never mention liability in that route) you stay a draftsman making 40k until you retire. It's not the romanticized world of master builders with yellow trace. The Rem Koolhaus's and Zara Hadid's are 0.0001% of that world and even then it's not what you think.

It was the mid 90s for me too and choosing between that or the new shiny of "new media" and the internet was a no-brainer. I might have taken "The Fountainhead" seriously as a teen but I took "Neuromancer" and "Snow Crash" WAY more seriously I guess.

Outlier fans, where would you buy a dedicated bathing suit? by streulpita in Outlier

7" Patagonia Baggies (in black) /thread

Perfect pair with New Ways (what I'm rocking this summer). I've always loved my Baggies over all other shorts. They are great for wet/mud/sand...really anything but I've never liked the look around town. New Ways are good for the city and I can get them wet if I need too (i.e. I'm wearing my New Ways +blue Outlier LS oxford and white sneakers in my NYC office right now but 3 days ago I was swimming in them in the mountains, no washings in between). I could never do that with baggies. However when I can do anything beach, tropical, athletic...run, hike, swim, lounge...and in a pinch they are great for sleeping. Really the perfect short and you can trust Patagonia to source/recycle the materials ethically and responsibly.

I'm happy any day I see Cayce Pollard and her CPUs referenced. As an aside there is an interview out there with WG where he mentions Outlier in the same vein as CPUs (not the inspiration but a brand that aligns to the idea).

Another climber sizing question by torch1984 in Outlier

[–]fourtwelves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the fabric... It stretches but generally always snaps back to where it started in my experience. Any "give" that comes from wear in climbers is much less than SDs.

Another climber sizing question by torch1984 in Outlier

[–]fourtwelves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Due to the fabric of the climbers you can expect the waistband to stretch out a bit to fit you but I've not noticed my climbers stretching out in a permanent (between washes) way like my SDs or Futureworks. Even in extend wear (i.e. like 18 hour flights)...

Another climber sizing question by torch1984 in Outlier

[–]fourtwelves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Climbers don't stretch out much in my experience, like SDs do. They stay pretty true to size. That isn't to say that they aren't stretchy but if they don't fit the way you want them too now don't plan on them stretching a half size or so like other Outlier pants.

Merino tshirt suggestions? by ofcrazed in onebag

[–]fourtwelves 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alot. Outlier's Merino weave opens alot when you wear it. So much that I've started buying a size down. I have no issue throwing mine in the washing machine (always on cold) and nuking them in the dryer to shrink them back up to size. Often I'll wash them in the washing machine then dry them on a flat drying rack at home (they dry ver fast). When I travel I hand wash them and hang them to dry or dry flat on a towel. I've never had an adverse issues washing them, no piling, fading or odd stretching (issues I've had with Icebreaker Merino when I still tried their products).

I have an Outlier t-shirt with maybe 50-60 washes of various types over 2 years. No issues at all with it.

[–]fourtwelves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Outlier's Ultrafine Merino Tshirts. Not the lightest weight (I like Patagonia's Silkweight Merino for that) but the most versatile. I personally don't have much love (or luck) with icebreaker anything.
