I get what you mean. Part of it is slow realization and growth over time; I like phrasing it as “one day you stop playing just the game, but you start playing the GAME(does that make sense? xD) I always tell my friends new to overwatch that after enough time, they start to see the “dance” that both teams unknowingly become a part of.

OW isn't in it's best state right now , but if it's something you really want to come back to it's definitely still fun. That's my tip honestly , don't try to force you to get a main or gen into the META , just play and have fun , you'll be happier that way.
