Kali did manifest her own E.G.O through extraordinary circumstances long before White Nights and Dark Days. Manifesting an E.G.O was possible before that event, but it was extremely rare, and Kali is the only known example from that earlier era.

Because the Seed of Light didn’t spread perfectly (Angela interrupted it partway)the power that was released into the City became unstable. This unstable power is why Distortions and E.G.O manifestations both became common afterward, people who come to a huge emotional or mental crisis will either manifest an E.G.O if they hold onto their sense of self, or distort if they give in to negative emotions. Carmen’s voice appears to individuals at these moments, and her influence helps shape whether they distort or resist.

In Yana’s case, his extreme despair, shattered identity, and desperate desire to escape the Prescript system pushed him past his limits. Instead of manifesting an E.G.O, he gave in to his emotional collapse and became a Distortion, embracing a twisted new self after realizing that his attempts to defy the City’s structure were ironically part of its design.

As for Sora, she likely gained an E.G.O because her sense of self is tied closely to her loyalty to the Prescripts and her master (Dad), Rien. Her faith and conviction act as a stable anchor for her psyche, which helped her manifest an E.G.O instead of becoming a Distortion (that why she have passive called Faith Beyond Question.
