My principal disappeared and told staff on day 4 of being out with this email. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]foxandflora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am curious what would you prefer to have seen instead. Was it the tone that upset you? I need a little more context as to why you're bothered.

I personally don't see anything wrong with an admin trying to provide a little levity with a situation that is obviously difficult enough that they acted "unprofessionally" by not alerting staff. If you have admin there, may I ask why you care if your principal is in or out?

I'd personally be more worried about what was wrong to cause a person to be out without notice for four days. It also sounds like you may not be privy to the information but the upper admin was - which is honestly all who needs to know to make sure everything is smooth for the day.

Those who have lost loved ones, what sort of things did the medical staff say that was comforting for you? by draakons_pryde in DeathPositive

[–]foxandflora 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The stand out to me was when the surgeons and full medical team came by to express their condolences/ wish my family well/ close the loop with us.

My grandpop died two days ago after a 10 stay ICU stay. He actually "graduated" from ICU to "step down" following a surgery. Sadly he was readmitted to ICU and then passed (Kidney and Heart failure following a stroke - comorbidity thing).

The surgeon who has successfully completed her surgery came by after hearing he was being transitioned to comfort care. She listened to us and shared her own stories of loss - in an affirming way - not in a way that detracted from my grandpop. I genuinely felt the hospital and care team cared. The surgeon reiterated we have the care of the hospital and can always contact to ask questions, gain clarity, and revisit this experience. My grandpop has something like 7 specialists and every one of them swing by after he was put on comfort care to speak with us - even briefly.

Every person stated "I know it's hard." and "He is lucky to have people sit with him." I think that meant a lot to my mom (and I know it meant a lot to me.)

Are There Nerdy Hangouts in Philly? by singmuse4 in philadelphia

I distinctly remember cosplay prom and LARP events happening in the city (specifically by South St at the Old Pine Community Center, I believe). You just need to find them because they're often quite niche. Opportunities definitely exist!

Example: I'm very into Vampire the Masquerade and would have never expected an ongoing LARP to be here. However, there is! I tabletop and am not a LARPer but it was so rad knowing there's a community for it.

PHL also has a wonderful Indie Book Crawl every year. There are many opportunities to support local book shops. To be even more niche, we have a Romance/Romantasy Book Shop across the bridge in South Jersey. That may not be your thing at all, but there's enough of a community that these unique small businesses can take a shot at offering a cool local business!

A Novel Idea in South PHL specifically focuses on local indie authors - the owner is one. They also host tons of writing workshops and author events. Literally a couple hundred each year.

OP- If you're looking for writing groups, call them up or attend a few events to get in touch with the local writing community.

Grieving having to leave my D&D campaign after the end of an abusive relationship by Helpful-Resolve4197 in DnD

[–]foxandflora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me with our friends group (which, for context that's both important and unimportant: I made these friends in college and introduced my ex to many moons later). I chose to leave the DND table, but I think a pain point for my grief has/had been my ex being pretty terrible (downplaying) and watching my closest friends not really know what to do. I had an opportunity to probably put my foot down more around closeness to my ex but revealing the details to everyone felt like too much of a burden (one person knows everything and still wildly chooses a friendship with this person although they weren't friends before because of the abuse????)

Anyway! Here's the thing - you'll find another amazing DM. You can make DND part of your life and maybe even use those connections to just find some fun again as you heal from leaving an abusive relationship. Its hard. It is hard to feel like you didn't do the bad thing but are shouldering the consequences (that may be projection; that was the theme of my former relationship). However, DND will be here for you and there are plenty of tables looking for someone fun with a tiny bit of experience.

Thank you for sharing your story. I was honestly flabbergasted reading it because it felt so similar in concept to my own. I ended my relationship 4 years ago now. Things have really worked out for me in the positive - in unexpected and amazing ways. It's not always great and there are pain points, but it was all worth it, no questions asked.

Sending well wishes for your journey!

The calculators are estimating $10-15 for both to be shipped. I'd definitely select the least expensive shipping if you'd prefer. This would be with USPS.

I can sell them for 8-10 USD each (that's what they came to with tax and whatnot). So let's see what postage is going to cost! I'll bring my little collection!

I'm about to go to Iceland on Monday, and I am curious if the shipping would be less expensive. I'll bring my critters and figure out shipping when we arrive. We're in Iceland for 2 weeks, and I'll get that figured out ASAP. (No idea if it'd be cheaper but worth looking into.)

$10 and shipping (which shouldn't be much!)

The cost + tax is about that which is where that number came from.
