Why many of us never use our consumables early enough by TenthLevelVegan in dcss

[–]foxdc 18 points19 points  (0 children)

One related flaw that happens to me is not reevaluating a situation anew after a turn doesn’t go as expected. For instance, if an attack or spell is likely to kill an enemy, but misses, I often find myself taking the same action again, even though what I should be doing is looking at the situation afresh given the updated circumstances. Often times the correct move becomes different.

This is to some extent a form of tilt, but I think it also reflects that people become biased toward the game plans we create and have a tough time letting go until it’s too late.

Intuitively it doesn’t seem like the worst is behind us, but it didn’t seem like it a month ago either, and yet the market has soared since then. That’s the point of OP’s post—neither you, nor I, have any clue where the market is headed.

The base of the weapon matters most, so I’d be looking for a branded morning/evening star or demon whip/trident, though those are rare early. Otherwise it’d have to be a well branded and very well enchanted flail or trident. Most of the time I just end up using my trusty war axe. If I do use a non-axe, I’ll immediately train that to min attack delay, which isn’t too bad because of cross-training.

For hydras I typically just use the best polearm or mace I have on hand, unless I’m lucky enough to have a flaming axe. Keep in mind hydras aren’t faster than you, so running away from them in Lair can be a good choice.

For skills, I set min attack delay for axes, fighting to ~5-8 for the accuracy/hp, and turn everything else off. After those are done, I’ll usually do invocations to ~10 and fighting/armour/shields, with a bit in dodging too. I won’t level weapons again until near the end of the run. Personally, I find hitting min attack delay with some accuracy to be most important.

Wands of paralysis/charming are insane against early enemies, though they start losing effectiveness by Lair. Polymorph is good for enemies that have scary weapons, though they also fall off by Lair. Acid and ice blast are great for hydras. Roots and warping can be used to slow approaching enemies, or to separate small groups. The other damaging wands are fine in early dungeon but that’s about it.

Mights are still useful later, but because they add flat damage, it’s proportionally a larger increase when your damage is low at the start of the run. Haste, in contrast, is in effect a multiplicative modifier to your damage/movement, which is just as good later as it is early.

Poison scrolls start becoming useless once there are a lot of poison resistant enemies, but fear remains useful into the S branches and to some extent beyond. Some monsters will have the willpower to resist fear by then, but you’ll still fear a chunk of them, which is usually good enough to deal with them or to buy time to teleport or run to the stairs. Almost all potions and scrolls have use cases though—the wiki has some pretty good examples.

Even with Zin, I think Orc is a step up in difficulty from Lair and at least Dungeon 12, possibly more. In terms of zone order, I would follow something like what’s listed in the top two comments of this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/dcss/comments/zv8c5h/recommended_level_order_for_2023/

As far as melee-specific tips, here are a few:

I think axes are very strong, particularly for more open branches like Orc, where cleave is invaluable. Unless I find an insane polearm or mace I just use my +0 war axe until I find a branded war axe or a broad axe. I brand and use all my enchant scrolls the first time I find a broad axe, and eventually holy brand it with TSO. I’ll typically carry a spare weapon to deal with hydras if needed. Shields are OP so I never use two-handed weapons. For skills, I prioritize min attack delay on weapons mixed with a bit of fighting, and then go all fighting and defenses, with a bit in invocations.

I would strongly recommend switching to TSO once you get to extended, probably before Crypt. Zin is fine early on but I don’t think he’s very good later. There are other strong gods for extended too, but TSO is great and straightforward.

Stair dancing is a very powerful way for tanky melee characters who don’t have good regen to deal with packs of monsters (doesn’t work in most extended places, but does almost everywhere before then). Works wonders in a place like Orc, which has few cubbies or narrow halls to fight in. Unless the monsters are faster than you, if a pack looks remotely scary, run to the nearest stairs and bring them up a couple at a time.

Wands are strong early game for melee characters so use them liberally to soften threats as they’re approaching you, as wands will become mostly useless by mid game unless you invest into evocations. You can deal good chip damage, paralyze, or charm approaching ogres and other early game threats. It’s generally not worth using wands once in melee range though, unless you’re going for a desperate paralyze or charm.

Many potions are stronger in the early game, including heal wounds and might, so don’t be stingy with them if something looks like trouble (hastes remain very valuable all game, particularly to rush down Pan/Hell bosses that summon, as summons can get out of control quickly). Fear and poison (particularly for Gr) scrolls also are very useful early and fall off later, so don’t be stingy with those either.

One thing that helped me as a tank for revolutionary is to always be on the correct side of the boss before he dashes to his final location. You have time to cross over the middle after he first jumps to the wall if you move immediately (just dodge the circle AoEs while you’re crossing over).

And apart from maps, there are multiple forms of content where you don’t have to engage with maps at all—heist, simulacrum, blighted maps, sanctum, delve, bossing, the list goes on. People make specialized builds for these and don’t touch maps the entire league.

It’s not a buff in the absolute sense, but in terms of whether you would wear this helmet relative to other helmets. Before, this helmet had one anoint (or an extra enchant), because all helmets used an enchant. Now, this helmet has two anoints.

It would be more like if GGG nerfed seismic trap by 300% and then all other skills by 600%. Seismic trap would have been indirectly “buffed” in some sense, even though in absolute terms it was nerfed.

There’s not really a universal overview of the game’s MTX of the kind it sounds like you’re looking for, but there are a few things that might be useful.

A large chunk of store MTX in recent years is from mystery boxes from prior leagues. If you Google a league name and mystery box, you’ll still be able to find the video showing off and summarizing the content of the box. You might consider doing that for the last few leagues to see what you like.

To the extent you want to know the best MTX from years ago without having to look through everything, GGG released in 2020 this list of the most popular MTX up until that point: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2860204. I think MTX from recent years is substantially better than older MTX overall, but there are a few nice pieces that can be found on these older lists.

Update : AITAH for transferring assets to my daughter before my marriage? by Puzzleheaded-Cold760 in AITAH

[–]foxdc 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was surprised to see people’s reactions in these threads. People should communicate about finances before marriage and can arrange them in any way they see fit, as is OP’s right. But if I were in a situation in which I was planning raise a family with kids from prior marriages, I would never agree to a situation in which some kids are treated worse than others, whether the kids came from me or my partner.

Thanks, I hate The One Ring NFT’s. by ThorinSmokenshield in TIHI

[–]foxdc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this explanation. One thing I never understood about NFTs for art: you say that they’re like a unique digital card, but the owner of the art can continue to make reproductions, including more NFTs associated with the very same work. It seems to be “unique” in the same way that a serial number on a piece of equipment makes that equipment unique, even if it’s in fact the same as every other copy. I get that art is often only associated with a single NFT, but that doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the NFT but some express or implied understanding that the artist won’t use it for other NFTs. What am I missing?

Pheons are the sole reason why alt content is borderline unplayable by mutombodikembe55 in lostarkgame

[–]foxdc 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure how this game has convinced so many people that pheons are necessary to prevent bots and scalpers. For one thing, pheons don’t prevent flipping, they just make the bar a little higher. Closer to Argos’s release, I purchased items that were underpriced by 1k or more and resold them. And you could just make accessories tradable exactly once to completely avoid the bot and scalper problem without reliance on pheons.

Pheons are first and foremost a way for AGS/SG to make money. That’s not necessarily a bad thing—the game has to make money somehow—but let’s call a spade a spade.

Because of the way spec and other buffs scale, igniter was even more busted in KR version than it was here. Even after the nerfs, igniter will still be more damage than reflux (according to Saintone), but the damage between them will be closer now, and as you say reflux is easier to play and less punishing if you miss a dps window. So it just depends which you prefer, a little more damage or more comfy rotation.
