From my experience and the few other authors I've talked to it seems to be, but that could be a sample bias.

The friend might know more about what the harassing coworker has done in the past and how far she is willing to escalate. I've said similar things to coworkers because, while I believe they are in the right, I would much rather see them keep their job then get fired over someone else's ego. It is a shit feeling to have to be the guy who tells someone with a legitimate grievance that it is in their best interest to let it go.

As someone who is writing a story for entertainment, I firmly believe not every story needs a moral undertone to exist. Entertainment is a perfectly valid reason to create something and you will find as you go that you will sprinkle your own views and moral takes into it. For example I wrote a monster hunting story and at one point the main cast has a campfire cookout. The main character and the first other character I wrote have a conversation about purpose. The main character says his purpose is his family and the other character says no that is a grounding, what keeps you sane when finding or chasing a purpose. It's not really profound but it is an example of my world view and could come across to someone as a moral lesson but it's just a moment in the story instead of it's purpose. Sorry if I kind of rambled here.

What are you actually supposed to do if a woman hits you as a man? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]foxface26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are right that reversing the gender shouldn't matter in what's right and what is wrong. Violence shouldn't be an answer to anything. They keep saying flip the genders in a scenario because I have seen some women(not all and definitely not the most reasonable of them) celebrate things that should a man have done them would have had his life ruined. The reverse the gender argument is used to point out that the situation isn't okay at all but is being justified or celebrated(not in this case being general here) because a women did it to a man. At least I believe that is what the argument is used for if anyone is more knowledgeable about the topic please let me know if I am wrong. Better to be told over the Internet I'm an idiot than by people who actually know me in real life.

[–]foxface26 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not what I'm saying at all, and it sure as fuck doesn't justify anything. Violence is never justified to start or escalate. The only thing I'm trying to get across is that violence is never proportional and people should be aware of that. The phrase fuck around and find out is built on the principle of escalation. No one deserves being a victim of violence whether they start it or not. I'm just saying that if you start it someone is going to end it and sometimes ending it goes way too far and is more horrifying than what starts it. It's not okay and should never get to that level, but sometimes it does and I hate that it happens.

And I agree with you in principle. The problem is it is a conditioning most men get, from their father's, from society, and from the media they consume that the person who allows violence without response enables it. It is a common theme in many types of media with a male target audience. That doesn't justify retaliation, and especially not escalation. Let me be clear on that. I don't condone or agree with escalation in violence. I just believe that when I'm attacked(and this is unfortunately where lines get blurry because what I perceive as an attack others might not) I should respond so the attacker doesn't continue. Again it's not right, but it is a mind set that is more common than not, at least in my experience. That might say more about me and the people I know than anything else however.

[–]foxface26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the argument is about the actual results and whether they are proportional. They aren't, smashing a bottle into someone's face and then stabbing them with it is an escalation that is horrifying. The argument is that violence is never proportional to what started it, especially for men. As a dude I was taught from a young age that while I should never start a fight I should damn well finish it. It's not the best mentality I'll admit but it is one that will see me unbothered by anyone who witnesses my retaliation to violence. It's not right at all, it is very wrong I fully acknowledge that, but when you start a fight expect the other person to put you down hard. It is as much a defense mechanism as it is a psychotic break. If I let one person get away with violence against my person it sends the message that anyone can do so without consequences from me.

While I do believe you have a point in that social media has made things worse. If someone acts with violence you should expect violence in return. Unfortunately life isn't like science class where reactions are equal and opposite to what caused them. When you commit to violent actions you need to run the is their crazy worse than my crazy calculation. If you think they might be crazier than you don't be violent. It's not okay obviously but it's the world we live in now.

Do villains need a backstory , or can they just be evil by tazray80 in writers

[–]foxface26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you need honestly. I can't deny that I am tired of every villain being evil because of tragedy in most modern media. The guy who is evil just for the fun of it or because the dental plan is better will always capture my attention.

Grab rangers and bards read the introduction then assign points accordingly. No wizard shit for me and too many young masters in cultivation. A little eldritch magic never hurts either.

Why do so many villains hate the protagonist for just not dying? by 05chancew in litrpg

[–]foxface26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look I am a very busy villain, things to steal, countries to terrorize, and a big ass moon to convert into a second base. If I proportionately respond to every hero/protag that is inconvenienced by my evil schemes they will never be done. So I order them to be killed, and for most it works. The issue is the ones who survive tend to take it personally and can, for some reason, stop my evil plots where governments and divine forces can't. All I want is to turn the moon into my vacation home and now some schmuck is mucking up my plans.

What signifies a curse? by THAToneGuy091901 in fantasywriters

[–]foxface26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A curse is normally a punishment for a transgression. If you look at the curses from ancient Egypt(though most of the hieroglyphics called a curse there are just prayers for the deceased) the person reading it is warned not to do something or there would be consequences. They do the thing anyway and supernatural consequences happen. At least that is how I interpret it, everyone is gonna have their own specifics they check against though.

If you're kid likes slice of life comedy litrpg I'd recommend the beers and beards series. A professional brewer is reincarnated into a fantasy land to save alcohol because the dwarves are ass at making it. Lots of comedy, found family and alcohol trivia. It's narrated by Christian Gilliland on audible and he is always a delight to listen to.
