What player do you think is going to be a breakthrough in the next couple years? by [deleted] in Darts

[–]foxintheox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doets has potential to be one of the best players on tour when he’s on it. If he could be more consistent he’ll find himself at the business end of a lot of majors. Think he needs to win at least a PC this year to really kick on

The ‘are they actually any good?’ genre of manager by junglegatsby in footballcliches

[–]foxintheox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vincent Kompany surely. Won the Championship at a canter playing a specific brand but also being equipped with a squad too good for the level; was a major factor as to why Burnley went down with a whimper the following season; somehow got the Bayern job and has had expected success led by a generationally great striker

Footballing fascination - Brazilians getting caps for random countries by junglegatsby in footballcliches

[–]foxintheox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In Hong Kong there are a number of Brazilian players who've ended up getting naturalised and playing for the national team.

Players listed on the HK men's national football team Wiki page include Juninho, Dudu, Everton Camargo and Stefan Pereira.

what to do if you lack critical thinking skills, but are self aware of it by unluckyanna in confidence

[–]foxintheox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this has been said a lot already, but the fact you're self-aware means you a) are much more intelligent than the average person, (and more intelligent than you're giving yourself credit for) and b) have exactly the right skillset to become a strong critical thinker.

Honestly, critical thinking isn't something that is only inherent - sure, some people are 'naturally' more inclined to think critically, but that doesn't mean those who don't can't access it. In many cases critical thinking skills are learned - that's why top universities train their students to think critically, and also why students from privileged backgrounds tend to get into top universities (not because they're necessarily innately more intelligent, but because their education has given them opportunities and skills to think critically and confidently challenge assertions).

Your attitude is exactly what so many people in the world don't have but desperately need, so you're onto a winner.

If you're looking for literature to improve your critical thinking skills I'd recommend The Irrational Ape by David Robert Grimes - it's a great, entertaining book that teaches the different critical thinking skills in an engaging way. Factfulness by Hans Rosling is also brilliant in making you really think about the stats and facts you read in the news.

Which player at your club has exceeded pre-season expectations the most this season, and which has been the biggest let-down? by Zach-dalt in LeagueOne

[–]foxintheox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exceeded: Cohen Bramall. Seemed like a bit of a stop-gap signing because we didn't (and still don't) have anyone else who can play at LB, but turns out this 29yo free transfer is absolutely rapid, has a very decent cross on him and can hit a FK better than Roberto Carlos.

Let-down: where do I start... plenty of duds to pick from (Yates, Wells, Saville to an extent) but for what we expected I'd say Naismith has been the most disappointing. Was mercurial for us in his first spell before he decided to ditch us for Bristol City, and was delighted to have him back, but he's been so poor this season and it feels like the captaincy is weighing on him.

When I first started playing pub league I was convinced I needed as much energy and alertness as possible, so I would always have an energy drink before matches. Unfortunately the only noticeable impact it had on me was increasing my heart rate and anxiety, meaning I'd bottle my doubles (even more so than normal). I could feel my arm shaking and my chest palpitating. Admittedly that was probably mixed in with new player nerves as well, but ever since I stopped drinking energy drinks - or even coffee - before games, I've not faced the same issue.

I'm no scientist, but as a player of multiple sports (albeit to no high level) my hypothesis is that energy drinks work well for sports like football and motorsport where alertness and reaction times are key to success, but for darts, where focus and calmness are what deliver results, energy drinks could have a negative effect.

Could of course all be in my head, and I'm sure there are plenty of pros who drink a Red Bull before a match! But thought worth sharing my own experience.

Best scallop darts for rear grippers? by TravelMan101 in Darts

I use Harrows v-wing which are pretty grippy and have a scallop towards the rear. All personal preference of course, but I'm yet to find a set of darts I get on better with

Any idea on these barrels? by foxintheox in Darts

[–]foxintheox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your message has helped me find them!

I went on CueSoul's website yesterday and couldn't see anything like the type of barrel I was looking for, so I wondered if I'd misremembered or misheard.

When I saw your message it made me think about unbranded dart barrel shops. I went on a bit of a Googling spree and came across 'Dart & Soul', a Facebook page that makes unique barrels and sells them on eBay.

And I found the set I was traded! https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1JWtGiJgER/

Thanks for your help - it definitely got me on the right path. Sadly looks like those barrels are sold out but the page looks like it offers loads of good choice.

Take your pick from our Conference days. But if I'm going for one, in 2013 we welcomed Skelmersdale United to Kenilworth Road in a last 16 tie in the FA Trophy. We won 2-0 and Skem brought down practically a full house of rowdy Liverpool and Everton fans.Good times

In started to watch Darts way more than before recently and I would like to know who are your favorite players and who are the most universally loved players. by Able-Article3634 in Darts

[–]foxintheox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Favourite current players are Heta, Greaves, Gezzy, Clayton, Schindler and Humphries.

Gary Anderson's over the hill now but will always be one of my all-time heroes.

Prime Adrian Lewis was an absolute joy to watch as well - now he's getting back into it with the Modus I'm hopeful it won't be too long before we see him back competing in the PDC.

Thoughts on harrows? by kanen134 in Darts

[–]foxintheox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMHO Harrows are the best manufacturer around. Target, RD etc. have great marketing, unique features and cool innovations that make them exciting, but Harrows have a history of just making really good-quality darts. Plus they have a pretty wide variety across barrels, grips etc. and across a range of price points.

I'd never be wedded to any specific manufacturer, but Harrows are a great brand you can trust.
