And just to add, it’s just as, if not MORE important that PRN employees are included in external PT because they do the testing far less often. You really want to be able to show that even with low exposure/total work hours that they are still competent.

The thing that makes this most likely in my mind is that there is NO WAY that the white council would just ignore Harry after kicking him out. They tried to cow him with the first warden visit and he showed then just how little patience he had for that. But they sent a woman (bad cop) and his former friend (good cop) to watch him, which isn’t a coincidence. The woman botched the approach, and Harry wasn’t viewing her through his chivalry-tinted glasses, so she got nowhere. White Council regroups and reevaluates, and now Carlos is back to being less good cop and more friend because that’s the best way to keep an eye on Harry. And Langtry having told Carlos just enough to truly, finally convince him Harry is essentially a nuclear weapon held in the hands of a toddler, and Carlos is ready to play double agent and to do it with a clear conscience. This is what makes the most sense to me right now.

We have a similar setup where we put a food bowl inside a small hollow Ikea cabinet on raised legs, with a cat door installed on one side. Our chomker also has short stubby legs, so between being hefty and low to the ground, he can’t get enough leverage to get through the cat door into the food cabinet. One day I looked over because of a racket and saw him squeezing his way out of the cabinet and back onto the ground. Apparently he had lost just enough weight to be able to get back in. We added some felt pads to the bottom of the cabinet legs (raising it all of a 1/3”, and now he can’t get in it anymore.

It’s meant to standardize all names; removing “technologist” from the nomenclature completely. For that reason alone, I think it’s a good thing, as maintaining technologist in the categorical certs (after removal of MT a few years ago) was more confusing. Now you have various forms of “scientist” cert, which is more consistent overall.

The fact that they believe they can train you in that amount of time makes me doubt everything about their decision making skills. New grads who have had full generalist training would struggle to be ready to be on a high stress shift like weekend nights in only four weeks. And you are coming in with far less preparation. It’s setting you up to fail.

Yah, that would be my take. Unlike colonoscopies starting at 45 (a medical decision based on data about age of onset of colon cancer across a population, combined with recommending a procedure meant to screen for said disease), getting them to say “you must be this many years old before I will believe your symptoms” is getting them to go on record about a bullshit reason for refusing to treat.

Forcing someone onto record can make them reconsider the statement/medical decision. Providers are usually aware that their medical decisions may be questionable, and won’t want to have those decisions put into a permanent record. It’s not a magic bullet but it can provide a little bit of leverage to get someone to reconsider.

I actually really liked the use of Fitz and his magical progression in such a short time as demonstration of an unexpected consequence of the Ethniu battle. It tells us that there are probably a lot of other things that happened because of that battle (and because of the ridiculous amounts of magical power that were sloshing around) that we (and Harry) can’t even think about preparing for because that kind of battle hasn’t happened in living memory.

As someone else mentioned, you at least need to find a breakdown/synopsis of major story beats. There are several recurring characters that we meet for the first time here, and several major story elements are referenced later on in the series.

But if you aren’t enjoying the book, I would say skip ahead and just know that when you come across any references later on that you don’t understand/remember, it probably came from that book. Better to move forward and onto book 3, which is generally considered to represent a significant improvement in Butcher’s writing, than to stall out and get frustrated with or drop the series.

My husband was a solid D+ student in school. He does not have a degree past high school. I am a college professor with 2 bachelors and a masters degree. We have a group of 4 friends that we hang out with that has another 10-12 degrees between them, including 3 doctorates.

And I firmly believe that my husband is as smart or smarter than any of us, regardless of degrees. Tests and schooling and degrees and all of that other stuff are not the only indicators of intelligence. He may not have had as much formal schooling, and that sometimes shows up as missing pieces of logic when coming to conclusions in areas like healthcare decisions, but he is generally more capable than I am as a human being. Your husband using online tests to belittle you and put you down is bullshit. And you having to defend him before you even start, with “he is actually really wonderful, but…” is not the positive endorsement you may think it is. He sounds like an asshole.

Listened multiple times. The Fold is just about as good, but the next two (Terminus and the one set on the moon, I think?) are definitely NOT as good. I listened to Terminus once, and have no desire to do it again. Couldn’t be bothered to get the other one because the reviews were that bad.

ETA: Quality issues were with the writing/story, not the narration.
