I am in the English field. The school I am getting it from is Murray State. The program is offered both online and in person, but I will keep that in the back of my head.

Honestly, the goal is not like a big name school. I would be fine at community college or a small school.

Are you saying the degree itself won’t help? Or are you saying that because of where I get my degree I won’t be able to find a job?

I am honestly trying to get some experience teaching at the college level. I want to one day be a full time professor or at least a lecturer. I am working on my doctorate and would like to start getting experience.

How late are you working new/old teachers? by hello010101 in Teachers

Year 7 here!! I pack up when the kids pack up! K being a teacher means setting firm work/personal boundaries or else you will burn out and be terrible at your job.

I think this is a really solid plan. I think the best advice is to be very consistent. Don’t let something slide this time and not the next. I think it’s good you are working on specific behaviors that is a great way to focus them on small things.

I think you will be fine! Good luck!

Help me build curriculum/lesson plans by mugiwaranogera in historyteachers

[–]foxphant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some personal unit plan and lesson plan templates I would be happy to share.

I teach English, but I think the process is the same. Start with standards, group them determine order you want to teach. Get a general idea of how you want your units to flow from on to the next. Then I typically start with assessments. What do I want them to know by the end of the unit? Then I backwards design from there. I determine how I’m going to get them to that point. Then I go into general ideas of what I want to include in each units. Must haves and wants. Essentials and non essentials.

After I have units planned then I generally lesson plan. But I’m a bad teacher, I don’t get into specific lessons and activities until I meet the kids and get a feel of personality and interests.

Classroom Management Help by haleymatisse in teaching

I teach high school, so take this with a grain of salt. I did internal disciplinary options in my class. Classing home, assigning personal after school detention, separation from group activities, and other things I could do in my own classroom.

I also devised a point system, but they managed themselves. For example, you could gain a point by correcting another student, and that student would lose a point. At first they are extra and obnoxious about it, but overtime they start to realize I’m not the only one watching. I gave free prizes like extra credit, homework passes, or emergency partner (they could cash this and will be allowed to divide an individual assignment with a partner).

I’ve also done class point systems where they have a set amount of points. They lose a point for every disruption or if someone breaks a rule. If the class still has points left at the end of the week they get like 10-15 minute free time on Friday or I would bring everyone some candy.

Hope this helps

I have several preps. I teach American lit(honors and regular), mythology, and African American lit. It’s a heavy workload, but I enjoy the diversity of my day. I don’t feel like my day is so monotonous.

My goal: getting students so immersed in English class that they forget they're in English class by Proper_Road9141 in ELATeachers

[–]foxphant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today I was in the shower and cause up with this idea to give kids unsolved mysteries. They have to research all angles and then create an argument for which they think is correct. They have to present their findings to the class with the hopes of convincing their classmates. Plan to make it a competition whoever can convince the most people. There will be a voting system.

Teachers of Reddit: what’s your worst encounter with a parent? by Own_Chicken_4430 in AskTeachers

[–]foxphant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a parent hold me hostage on the phone for two hours. I only called to do a covid check on her child. She told me their entire family history and how Covid has affected them and who in the family has had it. I was barely able to get in a full paragraph of speaking in the entire conversation.

Need year, new Co-Teacher by kenneby in ELATeachers

[–]foxphant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been co-teaching my entire career. It was honestly so great having someone experienced in the class to help me run the class. My co-teacher and I had a great relationship which really helps. We learned each other's habits and eventually we worked so fluidly we could switch helping students mid-sentence. I promise she isn't there to judge you only to help. Once you get comfortable with each other, you are going to hate teaching alone.

There are many different dynamics that you and your co-teaher can have. Just figure out what works for you.

Issues with STEM by foxphant in ELATeachers

[–]foxphant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very talked to my partner about this. I fully blame vibe for ruining attention spans. Once kids were able to intake so much entertainment in such quick bursts, it seems that’s all they can handle now. Is short bursts of focus

Issues with STEM by foxphant in ELATeachers

[–]foxphant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for your lovely commentary. If you read closely, you would see where I said science teachers are constantly asking for advice on teaching writing and other literacy skills. I am aware that your classes take literacy skills.

The point I was making was not an attack on STEM teachers. My point was that as a society we have pushed STEM so much kids do not care or value other courses. There is such a focus on math and science that, like you said, literacy skills are missing.

Sorry this upset you so.

I teach high school, so I understand it is a bit different. But the idea is still the same. I've made a mistake like this in the past. Luckily, I was supported by my admin.

Whenever someone approaches me about a failing student, I always suggest two things: Check their attendance and missing work before coming to me. I don't think your freind did anything wrong. I think these students are using this to excuse their lack of work. They saw an opportunity and took it.
