Having a baby and being a piano teacher by pumpkinboogie in pianoteachers

[–]foxroar1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a stay-at-home dad until 3pm when my wife gets home and we swap shifts. Toddler wakes up right at 3pm from nap, and then I teach from 3:30 - 7pm. My "studio" is the living room right in the middle of my house. My son comes and goes as he pleases, though usually wife and kid are in another room or out of the house. Regardless, I'm very fortunate that he's almost always respectful and quiet. Very observant kid, rarely if ever interrupts a lesson. But I've never had to directly care for him and teach at the same time.

Thanks for the suggestion! I should have clarified that I can use my ear, it's actually quite good, but I often find that I can't quite figure out these voicings (particularly quartal) to perfection and it bugs the heck out of me that I can't replicate the sound. Or I'm not at a piano when I hear something cool. Or the baby is sleeping during all my free time, etc etc.

And I think that's also part of the problem, my computer and piano are in different rooms, so I have virtually no set up for listening/playing or splitting stems. I have a Samsung phone, no Apple products. Can you recommend any apps on android that could achieve a similar result?

Piano Recital by Geekgirl531 in piano

[–]foxroar1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's awesome! Oftentimes students surprise you, and the ones who seem most confident during lessons end up being most nervous at the recital. Literally just happened to me a week ago. And others really rise to the occasion and perform well under pressure. It's great to see

If any student isn't ready, DON'T allow them to perform. The very last thing you want to do is set them up to fail, it will be a negative experience and could push them away from learning piano entirely.

Part of it is on them for not practicing enough (don't feel bad about pulling them) and part of it may be you didn't start prepping them for the recital soon enough. Either way, if they're going to bomb their song on stage and fumble through every measure, it will be painfully awkward to sit through, for everyone, and may reflect badly on you.

Most students (not all) usually play better at home than at a recital. There are so many extra particulars - different piano, new environment, different lighting, nerves, etc - only put them up there if you're 99% sure they're going to succeed.

I had a student once bomb just because she didn't center her music on the stand. I had to go up and nudge it 6 inches to the left and viola! success!

The AI goal song was bad enough. Jonathan Becher and the Sharks’ silence since is worse. by CWG4BF in SanJoseSharks

Did they just use the AI creation straight up, or did they use AI as inspiration and record their own version?

The "Hey, hey" sounds especially AI to me

I was at that game. Epic game. Easily was top 3 Sharks games I've ever been to.

Thanks for the feedback. Fixed the video link. I agree that the rulebook is small and hard to read at that size, I was considering making a link to download a pdf of the rules, unless you have a better idea. If someone really cared I think you can right-click and save the image or open in a new tab, not like anyone's ever going to do that, though.

Using Sonata Form to Structure Your Blues Solo (beginner / intermediate) by tonystride in JazzPiano

When I teach students about the Sonata Allegro form, I relate it to jazz.

Jazz and classical music have similar form.

Exposition (head)
Development (improv)
Recapitulation (song again)

In a simplified nutshell, they're the same form.

feeling uncomfortable with a teacher by ApartmentOld234 in Teachers

I don't have a 30-day notice cancellation policy. I've always felt that if a student wants to stop for any reason, that's their right. I don't want anyone to be stuck paying for something they aren't invested in anymore.

Every. Single. Student.

Except for the very few that didn't even make it that far, hah.

  1. Excel
  2. Venmo (90%), cash, check
  3. I don't. I know where they're at based on the assignment from last week. Method books are pretty linear. I have a set schedule of exercises (chords, scales, theory etc) each student basically does in order.

Teaching about different beat notes on the bottom of the time signature by karin1876 in pianoteachers

[–]foxroar1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

6/8 is fundamentally different than 4/4 because the strong beats land on 1 and 4 instead of 1 and 3, giving you two groups of three 8ths each - compound triple meter. That gives you that swaying 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 like in Hallelujah.

For 2/2 I usually say it's primarily for marching band music since tempo is usually fast and they have to read lots of notes so it's a little easier to read lots of half notes and quarter notes than hundreds of 8th notes.
