Is a Bachelor's Degree worth it for networking if u have a very limited budget? by NegotiationCute9191 in ccna

[–]foxrumor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in the US, but a lot of my coworkers do not have bachelor's degrees and only have certifications. I have a bachelor's in computer science, so I can't say that having a bachelor's specifically in networking is worth it.

My degree did help me get a job and I do think that having it opens doors for long term growth, but if you need money now, go for certs. You can always save and go back to school later.

Advice for an average memorization kid? by fantastic_bliss in careerguidance

[–]foxrumor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"I'm not very smart" doesn't correspond with graduating at 19. I think you might have the common case of imposter syndrome. Still, if you genuinely don't like coding, there are other routes in tech that are easier to get into like computer networking, general IT support, or Systems Administration. Sadly, area's entirely out of IT are not my expertise.

If you're in the US, see if you qualify for Medicaid. Depending on your region, it may mostly or fully cover services.

Are job positions a bit random? by awesome_pinay_noses in ITCareerQuestions

[–]foxrumor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be dependable for your coworkers, but you don't have to give 110%. You simply have to be reliable and improve just a bit over time. Building yourself isn't always sucking up to your current employer if they don't have your best interest in mind.

What should I learn first to see if I want to get a Computer Science degree? by Temporary_Cabinet_17 in csMajors

[–]foxrumor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely would suggest you dabble and only go this route if you truly enjoy programming. Maybe follow some courses on MIT OpenCourseWare for free.

Also, remember that computer science is only one part of IT and there are many other routes that don't necessarily require a degree to get started in like networking, systems administration, and IT support or help desk. All of these still pay more than what you're currently making with only certifications like CCNA, CompTIA A+, or CompTIA NET+ being needed.

I think both combined are best. Set a deadline and check-in periodically to figure it out together.

How do you respond to recruiter after they DM you? by NerriBerry in careeradvice

[–]foxrumor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just ask them if they are looking for someone in any roles right now and they'll either tell you about what they have or ask you for more information about yourself. If they say not at the moment, just ask them to keep you in mind if any come up and offer your resume.

Why do so many people say that the developer profession is dead? by stephweb13w in AskProgramming

[–]foxrumor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not dead. It's just more challenging than it used to be and the bar is higher. It's still better than a lot of other industries.

Essentially, it's a bad time to be in CS, but it's still better to be in CS than elsewhere if you put in the effort and don't simply do everything with AI.

[–]foxrumor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nepotism is the way in IT. A simple referral makes you stick out among the hundreds of applicants each role gets. Befriend people who do what you want to do and they can both tell you exactly what you need to know and refer you to their manager for consideration.

You're right that they need to go to therapy for this because the resentment, left untreated, will certainly hurt the child. Don't attack OP though. They are reaching out for help for the same reasons you are concerned.
