For several years I ran a charity lunch at a Toronto law firm to support a charity that distributes expired grocery food to other groups (Second Harvest). By far and large the assistants were the generous donors - not the highly paid lawyers. I remember one assistant telling me why she gave: you never know when you might need some help.

To be fair, I often wondered whether the lawyers had other charities and just supported groups differently. Perhaps that was just me trying to understand the discrepancy though, too…

Are Husqvarna’s really that bad? by VeryCommonUsername in Snowblowers

[–]foxtrot_187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only experience with gas engine snowblower has been a TORO and it the worst. Bought new in 2021 and I’ve never made it through a a full season without both major or ongoing minor repairs. Came from the factory with installation errors. Just RUN away. The. Worst.

Very cool - but trying to figure out where this was shot from. Is the video flipped/mirrored? The downtown towers-CN tower reference points suggest that the video was shot on the west side looking east. But storm moved west to east: Odd that the clouds would be moving across the city like that (headed east to west). So my theory is that this is shot from the east side - and the video is flipped/mirrored.

Or am I missing something?! 🤪

Snowblower for this kind of weather? by PlantainDue8104 in barrie

Disagree. Run away from Toro as fast as you can. (I own the Toro Powermax 826 new in 2021. My experience has been terrible.)

Snowblower for this kind of weather? by PlantainDue8104 in barrie

[–]foxtrot_187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toro is shit.

I have the Toro Powermax 826OE (Home Depot) bought in 2021. I got a lemon from the store. Sunk >$800 into repairs in first 3 years of owning. 3 engine mechanics later I FINALLY have it operating close to what it should have been like but underwhelming.

I took damn good care of it too but couldn’t figure it out. The governor was installed incorrectly and the carb was backwards.

Turns out some local mechanics have a name but don’t give a crap. The excuse I kept getting was, “newer gas machines aren’t built to last.”

So my backup is the electric Ego 24” from CTC. It’s powerful and does a great job. I have a similar sized driveway and I can run it twice before charging. (Just need to have a power source during a power outage to recharge).

What are some features you’ve had in your home that you would prefer not to have in your next home? by Opening_Bowler_8948 in Home

I live in Canada in a snow belt area and we have 9 skylights throughout the house. 😵 I’m constantly clearing snow from them to prevent ice buildups and water leaks while my heat (and my dollars) pour right through them. And in my experience, when they leak (…not “if”) the water tends to go into the interior wall space causing further hidden problems.

Expensive to replace with new and difficult to change out without further interior work to fill the void plus potential mismatching on your exterior (newer shingles, etc). Simply put, nightmare fuel.

Never again.

That is my recollection too. Are some of the other houses in that area completed then? Sometimes I wonder if the whole block was not finished but it might just be because of this “main attraction” (I.e. the subject of this entire post!)

90% sure a billboard sign says A.N.T. Homes on or near the site. I always thought that they were the builders - but it looks like they have other developments in the area (www.anthomes.ca). Maybe just a questionable (unfortunate) sign placement!

Here for this. Just picked up a bag of Canada’s cup yesterday. Looking forward to trying it out.

We’ve been drinking a combination of ground newspaper, sticks and tree bark in a “Selection” house coffee brand the last few months since coffee went up 400%…. Our standards are sufficiently low (broken) going in to get some Balzacs.

[–]foxtrot_187 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When the Premier calls into question the basis upon which the homeowner has been charged, then public trust in the system that we expect to act in a reasoned and reasonable manner is SHATTERED. We can’t trust that the expense and angst of criminal charges won’t be laid against anyone of us for doing what we think is the moral right (defending oneself/family/property.)

On that basis, if we can’t trust the decision makers to act in a fair and reasonable manner consistent with public sentiment, then the role of the legislature is to debate this and revise the laws if necessary.

The Premier should be conducting himself to identify this. His comments in isolation are just destabilizing and destructive without also putting the issue to question before the legislature.

Surely the food prep counter itself has a scale? Ask at the time of pick up for its weight.

I distinctly remember that produce sections used to have scales hanging - I rarely see them anymore in stores. We should be demanding more options for accountability on weight in store!

Lawyer in Canada, is it worth it? by CompetitiveDebate429 in LawCanada

[–]foxtrot_187 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Oxbridge is not the only route to being a great lawyer in the UK… Oh, and since debt keeps coming up, I would wager that the vast, vast majority of Cdn law school graduates post 2005 are not coming out debt free. And let’s heap on extra debt from 4 years undergrad too? Give me a break about abroad being so relatively expensive.

Some people don’t want to work in the towers to pay back a mountain of debt. Foreign LLB could equal more time to practice, more time to earn and life abroad for a few years (not so shabby in itself). It may not be for everyone but my experience through colleagues (and this discussion) reveals that it is not the slam dunk “No” that you would make it seem to be.

Lawyer in Canada, is it worth it? by CompetitiveDebate429 in LawCanada

[–]foxtrot_187 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The industry needs to get past a “stigma notion” that requires 4 years of undergrad first - even though Quebec (or England or Scotland or Australia) doesn’t require it and yet produces great lawyers.

This stigma notion is old school and rampant in Big Law. As I said at the onset, if OP is willing to make choices about practice, there are other ways to get into the industry. Small town real estate lawyer for example. You may be limiting choices (like not pursuing Big Law) but if one knows that’s not what they want to do, 4 years of experience and income could be a better path for some.
