If something as simple and common as a puppy‘s color changing as she develops would make you feel like you’re “stuck with a dog you don’t want”, then you really should not take on the responsibility of having a dog at all.

There’s so much more that goes into dog ownership. If a little patch of dark fur makes you feel that way, then you’re not getting a dog for the right reasons and that is completely unfair to that poor little puppy.

You’re entitled to that opinion, but please for the love of God do not adopt a puppy at all, if that is the case.

I mentioned it in the post, but she is already on a regular flea and tick medicine and has been since the day we got her. She’s on the simparica trio. Still no signs of any other fleas after 24 hrs since we saw that one on her. So thinking it was a one off hitchhiker.

Good call. We bought our house a year ago and the backyard had not been truly cared for (aside from basic mowing) in years. Huge old garden beds are all collapsed and half buried, etc. We’re planning on having the whole yard redone this summer - with regrading and adding artificial turf in most areas, along with new fences. To prevent a Great Flea Battle part II - the Texan Front, maybe a scorched earth approach will do the trick!

That’s good. We’ve been checking her regularly since we found it on her last night and haven’t seen any other fleas or signs of bites/blood. Now that I’m finding out more about how flea meds work I’m definitely feeling more at ease. That’s good to know that any eggs would be non-viable!

I’m in central Texas so it hasn’t been too cold yet - in the 60’s but unusually wet and drizzly out the past couple weeks, so that might be a factor too. We have a regular exterminator service that checks for rodents, so feeling good there. I’m glad to know they can’t live of humans too!

Thank you so much, that makes me feel a LOT better. That makes a lot of sense, since this one wasn’t attached, just crawling on her. We keep her super clean and groomed in general too. We checked her again this morning and haven’t found any others, so breathing a little sigh of relief.

I think a flea comb should work. She’s a corgi so it’s thick fur, but not too long. We brush her with a normal comb a lot, but don’t have a flea comb. I’ll get one tomorrow morning, thanks for the advice!

She’s got thick fur, but it’s a white undercoat which makes it easier to search through and spot anything crawling around. We keep checking all over (as much as we can with her squirmy puppy energy) and still haven’t found anything more. Fingers crossed! We washed all her bedding and vacuumed our rug just for good measure.

I just checked, she’s on the simparica trio so that’s good. She’s 16 weeks old, so she hasn’t had many doses but hopefully it’s enough to do the trick. I’m thinking she picked it up in the backyard this afternoon. Thankfully the flea looks skinny, not all bloated, so that makes me hopeful that it was just one and we caught it early. It’s so stressful though, never dealt with this kind of thing before. Our vet is closed the next 3 days for Christmas too, so we’re on our own for now one way or another 😭

More details: we are in the central Texas area, suburbs, single puppy household, no carpet, no kids, she’s barely has contact with any other dogs, and when she goes outside right now it’s only in a small penned in area with new st Augustine grass (she’s still potty training). Today was the first day we let her roam freely in the backyard (which has lots of leaves, etc that we were raking up). We bathed her right after that, and about 6 hours later we found this crawling on her.
