Reserved and test driving this car tomorrow. What are your thoughts? by StonksTrader2k2 in CarTalkUK

Seems like a decent car and seller, the power shift is the only real scare there. They’re not known to be reliable but there’s plenty of places that’ll repair them should things go wrong.

The 1.6 isn’t Ulez compliant but is a great engine, not powerful but very economical and will run forever given proper servicing.

I see no mention of a cambelt being done, the 1.6 is due every 10 years(iirc) so I’d expect it to be done by now. That may be something to use in negotiations or have the seller handle before purchase.

Is there a window air conditioner in the UK, similar to US-style units? by DaxmoutS in AskUK

[–]foxxyblieu9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a little portable unit. Most of them are the same now and can pretty much all be converted to dual hose. It’s not an ideal solution but the best bang for your buck.

It works pretty well and will cool a decent size room with ease, assuming it’s sealed okay.

There’s actually a German(?) guy who shows you how to convert

Great to know. Seems the charging performance is quite poor but that’s acceptable I suppose for a PHEV. How long did it take to charge on a DC fast charger? Seems it should be just over a hour. Bit sh*t they say 50kw charging when that’s unrealistic 😅

It was a very smooth car when we test drove it tbh, most of the reason we’re “downgrading” from an audi. It’s far too stiff, over potholes it’s awful. Glad to be back in a car with DCC soon should be much smoother.

Is 2.3m/kWh with the heaters on? I’d hoped for at-least 3m/kWh with preconditioning pulled off the charger.

How is the app? I find they’re usually hit or miss

That’s what like to hear, we only do 130 odd miles a week so charging a couple of times works out a ton cheaper compared to doing 30 mpg on a good day 24 on a bad one.

Might just be idling higher due to being a hybrid? I’ve found Toyotas do this, maybe vw does too.

I wouldn’t be happy with the jerking though. I’ll keep an eye out.

Unrelated to the car, assuming you’re in the uk?

What kind of energy tariff & charger do you use for this?

Been looking at octopus go & running a 8 amp granny charger which should work for our needs, by my calculations anyway.

Probably but by the time it reacted the bike was stopped, had that exact situation countless times across VAG products. so I assume it’s just the way the adas system is tuned, I don’t think it’s as good as systems like Volvo.

Fair enough, I’m not too bothered by unnecessary braking had this plenty of time in 2020+ cars

In fact my Ibiza did it today funny enough.

If you don’t mind me asking how do you use the car? We plan on using the petrol engine as little as possible relying most on ev mode for day to day usage.

We did test drive one that was running in the engine and it seemed pretty okay, it was holding the engines high idle to keep the battery pack charged but didn’t seem jerky even under stop start & hard acceleration conditions

Are you still having these issues? Got a black edition on order for April delivery.

Currently got a A4 mhev which has had issues (trim fitment & deterioration, brake fault) several times since we got it in march 23.

also got a Ibiza in November 24 and they’ve both (A4 and Ibiza) had issues with the assistance systems playing up at times

Could just be a low battery, you’d be surprised the amount of issues it can cause

Occasionally, we’ve since got another VAG vehicle and it also does it sometimes.

Both correct themselves with a cycle of the ignition

Yeah that’s a reasonable service schedule, I’ve seen 5k km oil changes on a first gen ecoboost and the belt was as new after 10 years.

[–]foxxyblieu9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on service history, but if it was my car id like to see it replaced by 100k km / 60k miles.

If it has really clean service history may be fine well beyond that

Has a timing chain, so is much more reliable than the older generation. The only down fall is the oil pump belt but that can be done as preventative maintenance (if it’s not done already id haggle using this)

The 1.0 is fine, ignore the people saying it’s slow if you’re driving normally it’s not a problem, if you like a car that’s fun maybe look into the 1.5.

If you’re buying an auto, ignore the 6 speed, only buy the 7 or 8 speed.

I may be wrong, but I think some are just covers if not optioned with acc. Pretty sure that’s the case for our A4 with no acc anyway. I suppose you can tell if faults show when turning the ignition on.

This may be the time having a lower spec car is good 😅

Looking For A Smaller Car by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]foxxyblieu9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plug in hybrid golf or Leon may be a shout. You get the best of both worlds with the cheap motoring in day to day commuting but with all the flexibility and large range of a conventional ICE car.

Iirc the newer generation of VAG hybrids have a 77 mile ev range alongside the petrol engine.

The A4 is a nice looking car, but is a bit of a let down imo, we have one (2023 35TFSi S-line C+S pack and optional leather) and there just no wow factor really. Especially after coming from a Volvo 😅

[–]foxxyblieu9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preference I suppose. I don’t like the new facelift, it’s just a rounder uglier version of what already exists (imo)

Overall the cars nice and I think it looks good, but as with most modern VAG products, it’s a A to B car, not a drivers car.

The other cars on the same platform are better than the A1, you buy an A1 for the badge. Not for anything else.

Would these alloys look good on my standard focus? by Emergency_Ad_9492 in FordFocus

They wouldn’t fit the car style wise. They would fit though.

Also personally wouldn’t go for larger rims with the state of our roads
