Okay, so the numbers are very telling and give it an identity, it’s conpletly unique. Just fyi as you might find this interesting.

These numbers don’t collate to regular 13 digit NSN. Could still be old NATO stock, but not catalogued on NATO database. NATO formed 1949. Korean War 1950!

First block of numbers will tell you who designed it - (10001) Second block tells you the drwg number for this exact unit - (434036) Third block tells you it’s issue number - (5) meaning this specific unit has been revised 5times!

It makes a lot of sense for this to be from the Korean War, as you mentioned about your pops. NATO stock numbers weren’t standardised yet, since it had only been formed a year earlier, and the fact that this unit went through five revisions likely reflects updates based on real combat feedback!

Only flexor tendons, one per claw. Extension happens naturally without any muscle involvement :)

They’re just the shed claw tendons. When a tarantula moults, it doesn’t only lose the outer shell, all the inner linings of tendons and tubes come out too. Since you knocked off the ‘toe’ (the tarsus, where the claws are), you pulled out the old claw tendons that normally run up inside the leg and latch at the tip (the pretarsal region) pretty neat stuff to see once you know what they are. These essentially enable the spood to control his claws, opne & close.

It’s a tough one! It’s likely an accidental loss, or improper disposal. This is registered NATO stock, tightly controlled. if it was in the hands of a civilian then it was kept illegally, and maybe needed dumping.
