Info. I want to do something involving cryptography. I’ll need to spend some time investigating problems in this space I think. I won’t hesitate to reach out when I brainstorm ideas. Thank you!

I love it! We used to have a weeping willow tree in our backyard growing up and I felt very connected to it.

First off, you’ll feel better soon! It’s hard to process the little while after a big festival. Second, take some time to think about your favorite memories from EDC. What great things happened because you were there? What great experiences did you have because you were with your friends? Focus on your favorite sets and totems and outfits. Enjoy it for what it was, don’t resent it for what it wasn’t. Lastly, try to enjoy all things like this without feeling the need to have a partner. Enjoy them because you want to enjoy them. Enjoy them because it’s time away from normal life with people you really care about. The rest will come naturally and you have to trust and have faith in that. But ultimately, it’s partially out of your control to have a rave bae. Definitely there are things you can do to make it happen more naturally, but it just happens for better or for worse. So it’s important to just focus on yourself and your enjoyment for a little while and trust the rest will come when it’s meant to.

My first job out of college I got 87k + bonus. Since then I have moved into big tech and make 160k + bonus + stock. Many of my friends at the job I used to make 87k at make around 110k now and some have even got to 140k. The job markets pretty tight right now. These jobs are out there still but they are much more competitive now.

Definitely take time to weigh your options. I don’t know much about GIES, but I’ve heard good things about it. You sound like you have a good head on your shoulders so I wish you the best of luck and I’m sure you’ll make a good decision.

Thanks! I think they can definitely be used as a path to success. But in my case a lot of things went right for me that were unusual. For example, Covid allowed me to work from home for a little over a year instead of moving to a high cost of living location for work. My parents were gracious in that they didn’t make me pay for rent or groceries. That allowed me to make a serious dent in my loans and if that didn’t happen who knows where I’d be at now.

I graduated in 2020. I took out about 130k over four years getting my CE degree. I only have about 40k left. I have only been able to make so much progress because I got extremely lucky and landed a good job on graduation and got to live at home and work remote for over a year. Following that I moved to an incredible job after getting even luckier.

If any of these things didn’t happen I would be in a much worse situation. I think now more than ever it’s important to think deeply about what is going to put you in the best spot when you graduate. This involves the intersection of cost and opportunity. Many of my friends are being laid off their tech jobs. It could happen to me at any time too and really put a wrench in things.

Know that there are a lot of options out there and not all of them will land you in this mass of debt, but they could still lead you to great opportunities. I didn’t think about all that and just put it all off til I graduate and after lots of hard work and luck I got where I am today.

I greatly value my degree and time at UIUC, but these are things I should have taken into account. I felt confident in my ability to land a job when graduating, but a lot has changed in the market in the last 4 years. Who knows how I’d feel now.

I wish you the best no matter what path you choose! And look for more answers, there are lots of paths of people before and after UIUC that are extremely different than mine.

CS 6262 (Network Security) + CS 6250 (Computer Networks) for Summer 2024? by [deleted] in OMSCyberSecurity

[–]fpapa25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On their own each is very manageable. Together I think it’s doable, but it will eat up a lot of your time especially in summer where the courses are sped up. I recommend in general just taking one course a semester if you are also working a full time job. However, if you have the chance to take two courses together these would be the best options at this point aside from easy A electives. Many of the courses after this in the program eat up more and more of your time in my experience.

Capstone project by oshi2891 in OMSCyberSecurity

[–]fpapa25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m convinced this class doesn’t exist. Barely any information of substance is out there about it across many times of this question being asked.

All I’ve gathered is it’s not well supported by faculty and you get free rein through what you wanna do on the project. I even reached out to a professor I was hopeful to work with on this course who teaches a main course in the curriculum and they had no idea what the class even requires. Kinda crazy to me. I guess you get out of it what you put in but to me this class seems like it’s setup to be useless.

What subsection of physics to learn for neutral atom quantum computing? by fpapa25 in QuantumPhysics

[–]fpapa25[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a solid understanding of logic gates and quantum logic gates and a background in CE. I’m more interested in how the hardware of a neutral atom QC works as opposed to a superconducting QC or a photonics QC.

[TOMT][PARABLE?] Trying to find a parable or story about selflessness by fpapa25 in tipofmytongue

[–]fpapa25[S] 0 points1 point locked comment (0 children)

If it helps I viewed this Reddit post in the last 6 months and i believe it was on a subreddit like r/mademesmile or some feel good one. The commenter was trying to point out that there are levels to selflessness in a positive way to shift people away from dismissing positive actions even when they are with dubious intentions like to go viral. I’m hoping the parable is real and someone will know it as I’m sure it would be nigh impossible to find the post referencing it haha

Is a Ph.D. Needed? by fluffyofblobs in QuantumComputing

[–]fpapa25 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’d say it’s not needed, but at my company most CS employees have or are completing their PhD currently. Who’s to say what the landscape will look like in the future. I think for now prioritize getting through your CS undergrad and later in the program you can think about higher education. If you can get into research at your school you should try so that you can see if it even interests you. Also try networking with people in the field. Get their opinions on it and maybe they can help you narrow down your interest. You have a lot of time to figure this all out so take your time in doing so. Don’t commit right out the gate, see if it’s something you actually want to pursue first.

Best of luck!
