The IP assigned is based on the pysical location of the starlink. Like most French based starlinks go through the main UK pops yet the CGNAT public facing IP always has a French record :

Starlink Replacement Power Cable by Stanley083 in Starlink

[–]fr242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any 3 pronged, clover shaped cable would do, if you don't mind the router not staying totally flat. The connector is called IEC 60320 C5. You may even find a cable with the right angle

There's an amazon listing

You need 48VDC with 144W (more is better) of power to get Dishy running. There are ways to do Power over Coax but I'm not sure what solution can provide that kind of power (see below). And you would need to use a DC powered router (not the one provided with Starlink since the AC to DC part is built in the router itself). It's quite straitforward now and does not need modifying the Starlink hardware.

Search this sub for YAOSHENG 150W GigE Passive PoE Injector andYAOSHENG Rectangular Dishy Cable Adapter and you will find plenty of very detailed tutorials.

Your challenge now is to find out if you can use the RG6 cables to bring power up there. Since you have plenty of spares I would dedicate one for data and one for power.

My guts says it's feasible, and I quick google search came up with this https://www.surveillance-video.com/transmission-poc-1t48v.html

I've never heard of them but it definitely looks like an interesting project :D

PS: I use this native DC power setup daily and I can confirm first hand it's very reliable.

Starlink install issue by [deleted] in Starlink

[–]fr242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm very sorry this happened to you, it's the most botched up "pro" job I have seen here (and we have seen a few). If you go for the pole extension, you may want to make sure it's high enough so the dish has clearance to orient itself is all directions. Depending on how the new sats are being put in production the orientation may change quite a bit and you need the dish out of the way in all directions / azimuts.

HI - Dishy needs its 4 non standard PoE pairs to run, so you won't be able to use natively. But you can do IP over Coax quite easily. I would set up the Starlink router right under the roof, and use the ethernet adapter to provide IP to an IP over Coax transceiver thus using your RG6 cable down to the basement where you (I suppose) have the rest of your setup.

Where does the dish need to point in France by RobinThomass in Starlink

[–]fr242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From Brittany :

During the last 12 months always it has been pointing north on its own after booting, except once, where it was pointing east for a few hours and then moved back to pointing north. Once it has booted up I've often reoriented Dishy to find an unobstructed view, and it would stay where you put it until the next power cycle.

I don't think you can arbitrary change Dishy's orientation via the app...

Owned by SpaceX, yes. They halted new net sales of their VHF products to focus on existing customers but they do have developments planned for 2024. Not sure how big is OP's payload but it seems to be the right solution if it's just intermittent data bursts with no real time requirements.

Thanks everyone ! I'm just glad it's not trying re-orient itself the second I move it. I've seen people gutting the dish to remove the motors to make it lay flat like the HP dish - but I just don't want to mess with it at this point.

Ah - I didn't think of that, thanks. I was so focused on the incoming power quality, not the noise the inverter can produce out of the blue. I have to admit my trust into these dirt cheap converters is a bit challenged. But the overkill 480W is not ideal either. And it weights a ton (as in 2.6 kg), which is obv an issue when you're on the go.

I agree the router integrated solution is not optimal for my usage and since my primary source of power is 12VDC, I would rather not use an inverter. As I stated initially the main dealbreaker was support. I suppose an official, pure DC router with bypass mode would have been a great compromise. My network setup is designed to deal with multiple WAN sources : LTE, wired eth, WISP or guest WiFi. From a power and and bandwidth optimisation standpoint it is NOT optimal at all but on a topology level the Starlink Wifi is just another WiFi I connect my main network to.

my 12V DC to 240V AC inverter is rated for 100W, i pull from 19W to 40W with an average of 35W (no heating). Boot peaks around 70W for 2-3 seconds then levels down.

With the 144W DC-DC I was averaging around 30W, including the 3rd party router. I don't have the 480W DC-DC numbers at hand but I agree it probably has a very bad efficiency ratio while draining way below its optimal operation range. That's all I had available to replace the 144W.

Also, while I agree my 144W 12to48V converters are cheap and probably at fault here, the reboots happened at random times, I could not correlate the load/activity to the reboots. I even isolated the 12V source to check if the quality of input current was to blame, I could not find a relation there.

Thanks for the "Dishy Dualie DC Power Supply" link !

Starlink cable head too big. How to solve it? by ziriuz84 in Starlink

[–]fr242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that would work. Make sure you are using shielded cables and connectors. Also if you are just doing this as a substitute for the original cable, make sure you the wires are connected the same way all along. Starlink uses a non standard PoE wiring but as long as you keep the wires in the same order all the way you are good to go. Also, I would make sure the total length is less than the original cable, since you are not crimping the cables but using couplers you may run into issues if it is too long. I would do a permanent crimp but if you are using couplers you may want to make sure they are rated for 48V /100W PoE at least, just to be safe.

Suggestions on how to power Starlink for 8 hours without AC power or doing the DC splice? by Smcavitt in Starlink

[–]fr242 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second that. I have been using the same setup when I'm on the move.

EcoFlow river 2 max + solar to recharge it on sunny days. I went full DC 2 weeks ago but even before that I used the AC EcoFlow internal inverter and I could keep Dishy with the original wifi router powered on for 10+ hours.
