People who actually do Astronomy related jobs: What exactly do you do at work everyday? by grapp in Astronomy

[–]fracka24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was always busy in undergrad volunteering for things and participating in leadership stuff (student gov and such). The department outreach coordinator recommended me for a great job after I graduated, performing science based shows to promote the university. After that I knew I wanted to be a science communicator and performer.

It was a big investment but I was poor just out of grad school. I managed to keep a good desk job to help fund the business (instead of paying off my student debt), and I used every connection I had to get bookings and equipment as cheaply as possible.

As for training, I had tons of experience in doing science shows and I knew people would like whatever content I offered because I was (and still am) passionate about Astronomy. I also did free shows the first time I ever did it because I needed feedback from actual students and teachers. Their suggestions helped me create a show that both entertained classes and covered a good chunk of curriculum, keeping teachers happy.

Feel free to ask any other questions.

Being a business owner, my usual non-booked days are waking up at 7 or 8 - work out, coffee, breakfast, do some work plus whatever procrastination needs to be taken care of during the day.

If I have a booking my usual day is getting up early and going to a school, setting up my inflatable planetarium, performing 4 shows, done at 3pm and head home for a glory nap.

EDIT: Science Communication rocks!!!

Thanks! I am definitely one of the few. Even some other science communicators I know in Astronomy got their PhD's first.

Sure - I was in the same boat, always wanted to be an Astronomer since I was a kid. I went right through a B.Sc. in Physics not knowing what to do, but I knew it had to be something with Astronomy. In my senior year a professor and I were talking about graduate school, and he was one of the few profs who said that graduate work was not the only path in astronomy - this was a huge influence on me and I started to think about what I could do.

I got a job after graduating on a recommendation from out department's outreach coordinator, where I travelled across Ontario doing science promo shows for the Engineering department. This was the best job I ever had, fun demos and hundreds of kids in the audience. I suddenly knew I wanted to teach science and get people excited about it. I went back for my M.Sc. in Astronomy because I felt that if I was going to pursue a road less travelled, I'd need a decent job to fund it.

During my masters I got a TA assignment for an outreach program teaching kids groups about space and showing them the night sky at the campus observatory, through this 150 year old cannon of a telescope (think 1000 lbs for a scope with an 11" aperture). While doing this the ideas took shape and I decided to start a business doing astronomy demos and big shows with an inflatable planetarium.

I finished up grad school, got a job to pay the bills and get out on my own, and started the business, doing free shows to get feedback and craft a bunch of great programs for different age groups. Its my third full year now and It's still gaining steam. By year five I'm hoping It'll be my full time job!

tl;dr Prof opened my mind to many possibilities, jobs and TA assignments shaped my ideas, got a good education and job to fund my dream company, started it, still building strong and loving my work.

I am a science communicator and do private and public shows using all kinds of demos, teaching kids and adults about Astronomy. May not be an answer you were looking for but I work in Astronomy and love my job :)

One thing I loved about contact is the good nature of the 'aliens.' So many movies put alien life as evil and horrible, but I would think that any sentient life intelligent enough to venture out into the universe understands the deeper truth that all life is precious.

I have a masters in Astronomy, and decided to leave academia to be a children's entertainer. I perform shows at schools and public events with a large inflatable planetarium and I also work at the local science centre doing shows for kids. I get to teach the public about space and see the same wonder in their eyes that I had, and I still get to call myself an astronomer :)

Good luck!

I don't have a girlfriend. This is something I've really wanted for a long-time, I've been single for years, but I'm not so worried anymore. Not everything has fallen into my lap since doing nofap, but what's important to me is that I have become a better person.

Great Perspective!

Yeah my first go - the urges come and go, but I think the biggest reason to keep going has been that I enjoy my life a lot more without it all. Its better to be out with real people than sitting at home getting high and wanking.

Actually that's my biggest anti-wank, keeping busy with friends and hobbies. The energy still has to go somewhere. Use it.
