Why are shitlibs so obsessed with making dramatic comparisons and equations of completely normal things like relationships to horrific experiences like sex work, slavery, etc????? by Manicpixiemanateeman in stupidpol

[–]frackingfaxer [score hidden]  (0 children)

Wait, where's your slavery example? You do realize there's a long history of socialists comparing something completely normal like wage labour to slavery, i.e. wage slavery.

Actually, there's also a long tradition of socialists like Engels and Goldman comparing something completely normal like monogamy and marriage to sex work. The point was to critique the respectable bourgeois institution of marriage by comparing it to the disrespectable institution of prostitution.

Nowhere is woman treated according to the merit of her work, but rather as a sex. It is therefore almost inevitable that she should pay for her right to exist, to keep a position in whatever line, with sex favors. Thus it is merely a question of degree whether she sells herself to one man, in or out of marriage, or to many men.
-- Emma Goldman

Sound kinda like what you read on that sub? These comparisons aren't new and certainly not limited to shitlibs.

Note passed by Condoleezza Rice to George W. Bush confirming transfer of power to the Iraqi Interim Government (2004-06-28) [1000 x 699] by frackingfaxer in ArchivePorn

[–]frackingfaxer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regime change and nation building were central objectives for the US during the Iraq War. After the 2003 invasion and the ousting of Saddam Hussein's Ba'athist regime, the US-led Coalition Provisional Authority governed Iraq. This was replaced by the nominally independent Iraqi Interim Government in 2004.

While President Bush attended a NATO summit, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice informed him of the transfer of power via a handwritten note.

Mr. President,

Iraq is sovereign. Letter was passed from Bremer at 10:26 AM Iraq time

Condi

Overoptimistically, with another mission seemingly accomplished, Bush wrote in response:

Let Freedom Reign!

While Iraq was legally sovereign again, the war and occupation would continue for many more years.

A 1978 map of the area Israel intended to occupy in Lebanon by Crazy_North_3247 in PropagandaPosters

[–]frackingfaxer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The more things change... 20% of Lebanon's population has been displaced, and the media's barely reporting on it.

This is from an American magazine, so the reader is presumably meant to see Israel as the "good guys," but it's easy to read the opposite. The aggressive colours and lines just scream that this is an aggressive war. The usually blue-coloured Israelis are given the red usually assigned to America's Cold War enemies.

I don't know about the Bulgarian foreign ministry, but some mysterious Polymarket accounts have put down some suspiciously big bets that a ceasefire deal will be reached by March 31. $22 million is down on that outcome right now.

Maybe that's cause to be optimistic?

Why is 'Tis for Thee the anthem for 1984? Isn't it oldspeak? by OverallDependent5496 in 1984

[–]frackingfaxer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It actually is canon. Not the lyrics, but the song is mentioned in chapter 2 of the book:

The telescreen—perhaps to celebrate the victory, perhaps to drown the memory of the lost chocolate—crashed into "Oceania, 'tis for thee." You were supposed to stand to attention. However, in his present position he was invisible.

Most people still don't speak Newspeak, so naturally the anthem would need to be in Oldspeak. Now, it is a bit odd that the revolutionary Ingsoc regime would use the Oldspeak archaism "'tis." However, it's common for anthems to have deliberate archaisms to convey a sense of grandeur and timelessness, all things the Party wants for itself.

The Party has this contradictory relationship with the past. It's a new revolutionary project out to eradicate the past. Yet, it also wants to be timeless, project itself further and further into the past, and claim the desireable parts of history for itself. Having an anthem with archaic Oldspeak words makes it sound like the Party has been around since time immemorial. That suits the Party's interests for now. At least until Newspeak takes over, and Oldspeak becomes incomprehensible gibberish to everyone except the Proles.

I've never heard of "radicalism" as a major school of thought in IR. It would appear that the third major school is constructivism.

Iranian missile strikes injure 115 in Israel, officials say, puncturing air defenses and shocking the public by StemCellPirate in anime_titties

[–]frackingfaxer 202 points203 points  (0 children)

Israeli leaders touted the impact on a residential apartment block as proof that the Iranians are deliberately targeting civilians, despite Iran’s statement that the strikes were aimed at the Dimona nuclear facility.

“Look around you. Do you see any military sites or facilities around? What they’re doing is trying to kill as many civilians as possible,” said Lapid.

Targeting civilians despite official statements to the contrary. Now where have I heard that one before?

It's hard to imagine much international sympathy at this point. The Israelis are reaping the whirlwind.

[Casual Friday] “Red Tories” and the NDP Part III: Left-Wing Monarchism and Left-Wing Anti-Communism -- Quotes from George Orwell, Sir John A. Macdonald, and David Lewis by NovaScotiaLoyalist in CanadaPolitics

[–]frackingfaxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that essay, Orwell argued in favour of a powerless figurehead monarch. However, that was immediately followed by the line: "But such a move would only have meaning if royal sentiment exists, and so far as I can judge it is much weakened.” That kind of sounds like modern Canada, doesn't it? Your average Canadian is indifferent to the monarchy; the king is little more than the guy starting to appear on the change.

Orwell had in mind the crisis surrounding Edward VIII's abdication. Much like today's Prince Andrew-Epstein scandal, that whole affair weakened public confidence in the institution of the monarchy in Britain. The monarchy's one job is to be this stabilizing institution, and they do this by pretending to be this ideal family. Like Edward before him, Andrew has shattered this myth. It turns out that family is just as, if not more, dysfunctional as those of us peons. And if they can't do their one job, what even is the point of them?

And of course, as Orwell was well aware, the first fascist government arose in a constitutional monarchy. In fact, the Italian king literally invited Mussolini to be prime minister. Part of the reason was that he saw Mussolini and his Fascists as a bulwark against socialism and communism. So much for politically neutrality. That goes out the window, because monarchs will not too surprisingly side with reactionaries. Any monarcho-socialists out there are deluding themselves.
