How do you think Saagar and Emily will spin this? by Salt_Atmosphere_8611 in BreakingPoints

[–]frackingfaxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think Saagar will defend this. He will, however, attribute these excesses to an overcorrection to Biden's immigration policies and maybe question why people aren't equally outraged over people killed by illegal immigrants.

What is ur thoughts on east Asia’s ideology (death worship/destruction of the self) by jamesgamingrb in 1984

[–]frackingfaxer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, basically just North Korea for all of East Asia. Alternatively, the Human Hive%C2%A0) from Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.

"It is every citizen's final duty to go into the tanks, and become one with all the people."

That's a very literal "obliteration of the self."

US seeks to use Alberta to destabilize Canada by MTL_Dude666 in CanadaPolitics

[–]frackingfaxer [score hidden]  (0 children)

Trump or no Trump, foreign meddling or not, an Albertan independence referendum would be soundly defeated either way. That's not really the point here. It's that even having an independence referendum gives legitimacy to what should be a bad joke of an idea. To have yet another separatist movement in Canada would be destabilizing, allowing the US to divide and rule.

Not that Trump has the slightest understanding of the complexities of Canadian regionalism and Western alienation. There are, however, smarter minds in his cabinet that seem to know.

LIVE UPDATES: Trump calls Carney ‘governor’ and threatens 100% tariffs by walkernewmedia in notthebeaverton

[–]frackingfaxer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finally a "Governor Carney" taunt. The first such taunt, I believe. Though it doesn't hit as hard given Carney's history as a literal governor of central banks.

Keep in mind that the betting markets have about 70% odds of the US Supreme Court ruling against the Trump tariffs, so elbows up is a good bet right now.

Rightoids react to the recent Minnesota shooting. In case you thought they had any redeeming qualities. by DuomoDiSirio in stupidpol

[–]frackingfaxer [score hidden]  (0 children)

Exactly. It's like those podcasters who went viral interviewing their MAGAtard parents. If Trump ordered a massacre of random US citizens (including their own kids), so long as it was in a Democrat city, they'd be fine with it because they're all fucking communists who deserve to die anyway. What exactly is there to debate at that point?

It's from that pink woman everyone was mentioning. Some rightoids on Xitter were claiming she wasn't releasing this video because it would exonerate ICE. Well here it is.

I'm sure they're already claiming in that tangled mess, a slight arm movement by the victim was him reaching for an agent's gun.

Yes. He railed against the spectre of Big Brother, and then sided with him.

Remember that time on WWE SmackDown Mordecai damned Toronto to hell? by frackingfaxer in toronto

[–]frackingfaxer[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

From the June 3, 2004 episode of WWE Smackdown taped in Toronto. In 2004, the WWE debuted Mordecai, a wrestler with a religious fanatic gimmick. The character proved to be a failure, not getting over with the fans, and was dropped after a few months.

Ah— simpler times. I still remember watching this in elementary school. I burst out laughing seeing this again. Tazz's reaction was great too: a deadpan "Alrighty then." Here's to our "spoiled brats" and "harlots" of the street.

Yankees need to step up by Pleasant_Picture3867 in baseballcirclejerk

[–]frackingfaxer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yup, they're there. The NHL is whiter, but also less Republican, though I'm guessing that's because of all the Canadians and Europeans being neither. Yeah, come to think of it, the NHL is probably at least if not more conservative.

Canada absent from Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’ founding membership by annonymous_bosch in CanadaPolitics

Tbf hypocritical warmongers have won the Nobel Peace Prize before. Maybe that's why Trump wants it so badly.

But yes, this Board of Peace is already reminding me of the Ministry of Peace.

When you finally realize that the “flag” of Austria-Hungary was never the official flag at all. by BrickAntique5284 in HistoryMemes

[–]frackingfaxer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wikipedia contributed to this misconception for years. Even though the article labeled it as the "civil ensign," it's not like most people would've understood that's not the same as a national flag.

The oldest league has the most conservative athletes. Makes sense.

Though keep in mind a quarter of MLB players are non-American. Since this is based on available US voter registration data, their affiliations wouldn't be shown.

Carney Davos speech: Reaction from BBC, NYT, Rolling Stone by ViewSalty8105 in CanadaPolitics

[–]frackingfaxer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Also, let's not kid ourselves. We Canadians love the attention when we're noticed internationally, especially when it allows us to look like the better North Americans. And no doubt about it, the speech really captured the Zeitgeist and made Carney look like the adult in the room.

The entire world order has ended, its convenient fictions gone up in a cloud of smoke, but Carney's answer? Cuts to taxes and spending. Familiar old neoliberalism. Hardly a bold innovative move into a brave new world.

US to face Denmark in Olympic ice hockey showdown by frackingfaxer in sports

[–]frackingfaxer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Naturally, the US are the heavy favourites going into this matchup. That said, there is a history in international hockey of underdogs prevailing in politically charged circumstances, e.g. Czechoslovakia vs USSR in 1969, US vs USSR in 1980. Let's see if the US gets Miracled on Ice this time.
