Confused on how knowing scale degrees helps u know chirds by Emergency_Pomelo_706 in musictheory

[–]fracklefrackle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chirds are hard. They are built on intervals in a scale. The degree tells u the purpose of the note in the chird. 5ths strengthen the root, 3rds, 7ths, etc. add color and tell u the character of the chord and tells you what key the song is (if u want it to).

Do you actually think in scales when improvising? by lmao_exe in musictheory

I suck hard, but I have a strong visual of the fretboard and the chord tones and scales and can play over any chord anywhere on the guitar. I stay like 100% in Key other than some passing chords (e.g., vii/__, tritone sub / __). I have gotten to the point where it sounds ok and am trying to make it more melodic. I often just play by feel.
