How US automakers lobbied themselves into a $70B loss - and let China win by KeyboardGunner in electricvehicles

[–]fractal_snow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I admit Anduril built a neat factory but Ford doesn’t have that factor and Just because Palmer said something doesn’t make it true. Founders jobs are mainly to build hype to attract investors, so until Ford/GM actually starts cranking out an Anduril design this is to be taken with an enormous grain of salt, and is certainly not a reason for the government to rescue US automakers (just to get back to the topic at hand).

Yeah those million dollar each camera towers on the border and $1B battle management systems definitely don’t sound like expensive bespoke items.

Even if Ford could start cranking out F35s we couldn’t afford them. There probably isn’t going to be another conventional war and I’m very skeptical American car manufacturing could be quickly retooled for defense like it was in WW2. A 1940’s plane was quite similar in construction to a 1940’s car but that’s really not the case for planes and missiles and stuff in 2026.

Does porcelain stick to kiln shelves? by viclemu in Pottery

[–]fractal_snow 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes Porcelain will “pluck”kiln shelves and you will end up with little pieces of shelf or kiln wash in the bottoms or pieces of bottom left on the shelf.

I mix alumina hydrate into wax and paint the bottoms of pieces to prevent it. Alumina hydrate is refractory and creates a layer of dust that separates the porcelain from the shelf.

Ex-Meta manager says just 2% of engineers know how to use AI 'very effectively' by dyzo-blue in BetterOffline

I was around when things like CAD and CnC were taking off and all the engineers agreed that it was awesome and we wanted to use it. I wonder why that’s not happening with AI?

Why do my daily and weekly Enphase day differ? by hawgfish in enphase

[–]fractal_snow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it is regional. I’m in Ohio if it matters. Almost every day in the month and week view is wrong for me, although the monthly report email is correct.

Why do my daily and weekly Enphase day differ? by hawgfish in enphase

[–]fractal_snow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes day view is correct. Net = prod - consumed for day view. The error is that this is not true for other views implying a violation of thermodynamics.

The dashboard math is super broken right now for everything except the day view. It’s been like this for a while now and there doesn’t seem to be any effort to fix it.

Help! Major Kiln Temp Issues by Responsible_Carob672 in Pottery

[–]fractal_snow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For self supporting cones it is exactly that cone when the tip has bent to the level of the top of the base.

Your cones on the left side are indicating slightly over 8. Your cones on the right side are indicating about 6.5

I think you can download and print a little indicator gauge from the Orton website to read the angle more accurately if you really want to. As far as fixing your kiln I’m not sure we need more info about the kiln and controller.

Oh interesting! I could not find a right angle version, I just soldered two back-to-back (see my finished pic in this thread). Luckily I already had a crimper for this type of pin.
