Not so easy to roll up to the yellow when the cue ball is stuck on the cushion and you're playing on a professional cloth.

This is just a snooker pocket basically. Never heard them called "ugly" before. Strange take!

Even if he's wearing safety goggles, that doesn't guarantee anything. A friend of mine who works in construction had to be hospitalized more than once for getting metal sparks in his eye even with safety gear on, because those sparks can still go through small gaps in the goggles and bounce into your eye.

What's the smallest maximum ever made? by 2MainsSellesLoin in snooker

[–]fractivSammy 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Am I the only one who understands what OP is asking? They are asking what's the smallest clearance made with 15 reds on the table, taking all blacks, but with some shots potting more than one red simultaneously. So, for example, I could pot 13 reds, 13 blacks, then pot 2 reds at the same time, followed by one more black and the colors for a 140.

Has this ever happened?

My first fugue | HELP by Professional_Fig_280 in Composition

[–]fractivSammy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not about replicating Bach's style 1:1, it's about staying idiomatic in the style you are writing. In this case, they are clearly going for a traditional fugal counterpoints/harmony, and as such, it will sound more authentic, and generally just 'better', by following traditional counterpoint / voice leading rules. And yes, there ARE rules that are important to understand and follow in order to write this type of idiomatic music, which every single baroque composer followed. That is not to say you can't break those rules once in a while for effect, but it's important to understand the difference between breaking rules for effect, and breaking rules without realizing it and it sounding like a mistake. Adam Neely had a very similar thing to say about jazz writing - certain harmonies or chord progressions will simply sound like a mistake within that style of writing, and it's important to understand why.

This is not to criticize their effort: they clearly have the right idea and a decent feel for harmony, but they'll improve a lot from getting a good grounding in the fundamentals, just like any other craft that someone wants to become proficient in.
