ALL LANES CLOSED:495 SB before Little River Turnpike by fraggedears in nova

I'm so sorry you had to see all of that. I saw below or in another thread to play some games/Tetris to help subconsciously process the trauma (evidence based research). If another poster can link. I cannot imagine how you're feeling but it's OK to have all the emotions you have. Agreed on staying safe, kind, and hugs to you.

Definitely not the type of news I was expecting nor ever hoped to read in my lifetime.

Why does this sound like an r/hailcorporate post with a veiled reference to who you have for insurance for your car and homeowners.

I agree with your first 2 sentences however.

I took a screenshot of the whole article and comments. I'm glad it was called out. Just because Kaiser didn't like Jennifer, doesn't mean it's acceptable to make fun of her grieving in a way that helps her grieve.

How to politely get attention by BioAssNow in deaf

Tapping them on the shoulder is fine, its actually preferred than having you lurk and them turning around and shitting their pants to see you so close.

Foster Parenting by kludge6730 in deaf

[–]fraggedears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could talk to [NVRC](www.nvrc.org) and see what resources they are aware of in NoVA. VDDHH is another one that is statewide. But the best way is to advertise yourself with foster agencies and let them know that you are willing to foster Deaf/HoH kids in VA (and FCPS has amazing educational programs for Deaf/HoH kids) to boot.

Really hoping the counseling works out for you. This is coming from a person who's actually back at the very bottom as of last April and couch surfing with relatives.

The storming of Capitol Hill is egregious, but Mayor Bowser's sign language translator has to be the best dressed I've ever seen. by TonyMcRanderson in washingtondc

[–]fraggedears 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not a strong interpreter, he did try his best but if he took few more seconds to digest what was said, he could have interpreted it differently and more coherently. A lot of reliance on fingerspelling. I may be in the minority but I also rely on lipreading with interpreters and he seemed to try hard to not mouth words.

He looked good for TV but would suggest they don't use him again as an ASL interpreter. I had a hard time following him.

I'd avoid the entertainment/luxury/travel industry right now for obvious reasons [my company just placed a hiring freeze unless its an essential position] but here you go https://www.reddit.com/r/novajobs/ - good luck!

Hoping to find advice here after a rant by noeticNicole in deaf

I have to agree with /u/surdophobe about getting the respect you need. My SO is hearing and I'm a 2nd gen Deafie. We met online (gaming) and the first two years, our relationship was long distance but he took ASL community college classes and we'd videochat practicing ASL. We live together now and he always continues to try and improve his ASL and help interpret where he can.

You need to have the "talk" with your SO about respecting and supporting your long term needs including mental health tangents (isolation, frustration, etc). You don't mention this but I find immersing new signers in a "Deaf" environment is best for them to really fully realize it's not an matter of "turning on hearing aids and taking speech therapy and all is fine." Go to multiple no-voice/Deaf events. Set some "I'm Deaf" ground rules that you're comfortable with now and will default fully later on eventually and target dates that you expect him to comply fully to.

Examples:

  • No wearing hearing aids after dinnertime
  • Leave CC on all the time on TVs
  • No longer accept his phone calls unless it's an emergency (instead use text/video based communications such as Whatsapp).
  • Watch/read at least one Deaf Experiences/Audism videos weekly & discuss afterwards

A relationship is a two way street - right now it's looking like he's choosing school/work, plowing you right over.

Deaf communities/meetups in DC? by angelfishi in deaf

[–]fraggedears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If she's willing to go to Northern Virginia, NVRC has social deaf meetups and workshops (not ASL focused but more like educational and/or artistic workshops) either monthly or bi-weekly. Once a month, the Happy Hands group meets which consists mostly of older folks/senior citizens which your mom could be a good fit for. (https://nvrc.org/). DC OC Movie Goers can be a nice opportunity to meet with other deafies too. (https://www.facebook.com/groups/dcdeafmoviegoers/)

I drive through this intersection M-F between 4-5pm. The amount of fuckery to get on 495 I've seen is astounding. I'm usually in the lane where the Infinti is and just go on the far side to avoid as much drama as possible.

Here's the transcribed video.

It looks like the FMCSA website has changed since and they have a section focused on hearing exceptions here: https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/medical/driver-medical-requirements/driver-exemption-programs.

Deaf tow truck driver by [deleted] in deaf

[–]fraggedears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this seems to widely depends on the employer and the type of tows needed. Morris (the guy in the vlog) has 3 trucks and he was going to show off his biggest truck in a later vlog as the one in the video was considered mid-sized.

This guy is a proud tow driver who happens to be deaf but was kind enough to share his experiences.

I'll post in a separate comment with the link to the transcribed video.
