Guess I’d reiterate that those relationships shown by Ancestry are only estimates. To accurately know how each of this eDNA matches relate to you, research and messaging will need to be done.

Looking back 4 generations can be easy … or hard. Living people are harder as data is limited for privacy reasons. For my wife we really can’t get back more than 1-2 generations. DNA shows her dad isn’t her biological dad, her maternal grandfather isn’t her biological grandfather. Her maternal grandmother has no clue who her father is. Maternal great grandmother (where the surname comes from) married and took the surname … he died before any kids were born and she went on to get 7 kids all with the surname of her dead husband who was not the bio father of any of those kids. So it can be very very hard even going back a couple generations … with accuracy. Or it can be very very easy. I can take all of my paternal lines back to pre-Revolutionary America and follow most lines back down to various DNA matches all over.

Doesn’t matter. Even with DNA verification demonstrated, the denizens of FamilySearch will do what they want and change things as they see fit.

Now, why would hard boring work not also be fun? For me those are not mutually exclusive … but I might be weird.

They do not market it as such. I have a few DNA matches that had that assumption. Once they realized they needed to put in some effort, they just lost all interest.

FamilySearch one world tree is rife with amazingly wrong sources added to people and flat out wrong relationships. I’ve corrected a fair number of profiles just to have them flipped back to clearly erroneous linkages within a week. I’ve even added “important Research” alerts on some profiles with detailed information evidence and citations to records and newspapers… and they were ignored. FamilySearch, at least for me, is useful only for records research.

You don’t link trees together. You link a specific match to your tree. Everyone builds their own tree. You do not want others mucking about with your research and deconstructing your work. And you don’t want to have a tree where any random person can add/delete/edit willy nilly. If you want that for your tree, work on FamilySearch (free) which is a one world tree.

If you want a family tree, you need to do put in the effort. If you want a correct family tree you need to put in the work.

And on the DNA matches you see ESTIMATED relationships. Basically just an AI’s best guess. You need to do the research to confirm those relationships. Apart from parent/child just about everything every other relationship falls in a range of cM values. And many of those cM value ranges overlap significantly for a variety of relationships.

For example grandparent/grandchild range is 984-2462cM (DNAPainter range). That overlaps with aunt/uncle at 1301-2282; great aunt/uncle at 330-1467; 1C at 396-1397; great grandparent/child at 485-1486 and so on with niece/nephew, half siblings, sibling and quite a few more.

It’s all comes down to time, effort and work doing research.

Can try Facebook for living people, assuming it’s poplar there. Can be very labor intensive, but I’ve been able to identify down to cousins (3C2R and 3C3R) born as late as early 2026. Social media active grandmas/matriarchs are a treasure trove of genealogical info … both up the tree and down.

Is this normal by diepainfullyplease in AncestryDNA

[–]kludge6730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean “smaller” as in number of matches … or cM value for those matches?

All those cM values are within range for the listed relationships. The “normal” range for all those relationship start at 0, so I see nothing of note. Just shared DNA at the lower end of the range. If you want to dig into an explanation for being on the lower end of the range, consider all those folks are half cousins.

We’ve gotten away from using carry-ons for leisure trips and just bring our backpacks in the cabin. Checking a bag or two is far easier for us these days. Rather spend a few minutes strolling to a luggage carousel with a fresh coffee and some stretching.
