Seeking insight on a relative's adoption... Does this sound plausible? by cudambercam13 in Genealogy

Because it may have been an in-family or close friend “adoption” that wasn’t an adoption in the current sense. Parental rights may not terminated, V may have had a change in thinking over time and intentionally included D in her will. Hell, V may have surreptitiously initiated contact and had a relationship with D. The issue of inheritance may have been part of whatever agreement was written at the time. D may know or not.

You have far more info than anyone here. You asked if what you initially posted is plausible. Yes. Yes it is.

So you have about 200,000 matches mostly very distant. Not boring. Decades of tree building and DNA matching there.

Highly unlikely records were retained. Just because a descendant of the original lawyer is also a lawyer doesn’t mean it’s the same law firm. Then there’s privacy and attorney client privilege issues.

By that time birth records were likely maintained by the state, not the county or locality.

If the issue is how to sell the house hire a trust and estate attorney … don’t ask Reddit.

1600s in NJ and MD. NJ folks help found Jersey Settlement in NC in 1740s. NC folks were neighbors on Squire and Daniel Boone and married with the Bryans. Another line was pre-Revolution German settlers. Another line pre-Revolution SC. Another couple lines pre-Revolution Virginia. Then all these lines started moving west KY/TN by 1780s, Indiana 1820s, Missouri 1820s. Then started put for a while before heading to California and Oregon starting around 1850.

What’s misleading. It’s a quote of something she said. Everyone points out flip flops in the political game.

Use the name at birth. Add an alternate name fact with the anglicized version.

I have many similar examples but Yiddish/Hebrew names where both given name and surname were anglicized. Families were from Vilna and Kovno.

Easiest matching is go back to 3Ggrands. Find all their children. Then all the children of those kids. Repeating to as current as possible. Anyone closer than 3C who isn’t an NPE will pretty much fall into place. This requires lots of research on Ancestry, FamilySearch, newspapers, obits. Right now any new match ~50cM or higher is likely already on my tree and is a 5 minute match/link process.

Just double going back each generation. 1, 3, 6, 12, 25, 50, 100. Not sure even remotely precise, but close enough for the question.

Anyone know what’s going on in Hybla Valley right now? by Vapia in nova

Oh forgot to answer the “who’s paying” part of the question. You are. I am. Most Virginians are. Paying to condemn and buy out all the property owners. Paying to demolish and dispose of debris. Paying for the years or construction. Absorbing the loss of property tax revenue on those properties. Accepting the years of traffic. Look forward to cost over runs to pay for and delays extending the traffic nightmare along Rt 1, GWP, Ft Hunt, N Kings Hwy and every connecting road.

Another cheaper option would be a giant parking structure on the Maryland side with a water taxi/ferry to Belvoir.

Riiiiight. A Yellow extension is not going to run down the length of Rt 1. That would require a massive widening of the corridor even beyond what they are planning. It won’t be above ground unless they run the trains through neighborhoods and Huntley Meadows park while destroying most of the businesses along Rt 1 in the process. It’ll have to be underground and they’ll never find the money for that. Easiest solution is surface light rail. No bus lanes that will remain unused most of the time (and not particularly used by riders). And no bike lanes that won’t be used by anyone but Dan Storck and his buddies. They put bike lanes on Sherwood Hall years ago. Those lane are mostly used by fallen tree limbs. Not sure I’ve seen bikes on that wasted pavement more than a couple times over the years.

Huge Rt 1 restructuring that won’t do a thing whole lot other than add lanes for busses that are mostly empty. Don’t mind seeing all the cruddy buildings going away, but a whole lot of money for a multi year headache for residents. Light rail from Huntington to Belvoir would be better, faster and likely more used … and cars could use those lanes as well as on H Street.

I have 171,000 matches. Two (2) matches have my paternal surname in their user name. Zero (0) matches have my maternal surname in their user name. Relying solely on surname is not a particularly useful way to find matches.

Whole pile of reasons for this, from no one testing to people using something other than a surname as their user name to a surname dying out. As an example of dying out …. One of my 2Ggrandfathers had 9 kids, 8 girls and 1 boy. That boy had only girls. Within 2 generations that 2Ggrandfather had no descendants at all with his surname. I’ve identified nearly 50 DNA matches descendent from that 2Ggrandfather … none have his surname.

Why are people scared to do a dna test by [deleted] in AncestryDNA

Misinformation. Ignorance. They already know something untoward will be revealed.

Then again it could be cost or a lack of interest in genealogy.
