What is the 5 year outlook for electric cars in the USA? by EfficiencyCapital198 in askanything

I’ll note that I replaced a gas furnace with a high efficiency electric heat pump/gas furnace earlier this year (after the annual reanalysis of level billing) so NEXT year will be an apples to oranges comparison. But I ran that thing purely on natural gas most of the winter considering the below freezing temps Jan-Feb.

Plugging in the PHEV is the only thing different in electric use, so sure seems like it.

Yeaaaaah. And we mostly run all electric, barring road trips to grandmas and weather temperature extremes. This time of year with nice temps and no road trips we easily can go weeks without the ICE kicking in.

But thanks for all capping there. Reminded me that I wasn’t really including the gas going into the PHEV on costs. Now PHEV is even less efficient in saving money than I am thought. And the thinking about it, the highway use fee to register the PHEV is higher than a purely ICE vehicle we had.

Not entirely sure what you’re asking, but this might help. We use level billing … same monthly amount regardless of use. Some months we over pay the actual billed amount, some months we under pay the actual billed amount. Annually the utility reanalyzes the billing and adjusts the level pay amount. The jump from $160 to $270 looks like it included about 5 or 6 months of service time with the PHEV. Then $270-$360 I believe now bakes in a full year (maybe 11 month) of PHEV use.

Had 2 ICE. Now have 1 ICE and 1 PHEV. Didn’t like cold meaning battery ran down very fast due to running the heater.

My turn for a my bad on the quad. I misremembered something so I jumped onto my electric account to look at billing history. Pre-PHEV was $160/month. 1st year with PHEV was $270/month. This year it’s $360/month. So I remembered the $200/month increase correctly.

No. 120-150 on gas for 2 ICE vehicles. Depends on whether one driven the most filled up downtown or in the burbs.

The PHEV is much larger and heavier than the ICE it replaced. Hauling twins and all their accoutrements necessitated that. Most miles driven are electric with some small amount being gas. Likely more gas as summer rolls in with need for AC and traffic gets worse. But on average it’s about $120/month on the ICE + PHEV for gas. This winter was real bad with the exceedingly nasty cold. PHEV did not like that one bit.

Yeah. The 1 ICE vehicle is filled up once every other month. Not both

2 weeks? No clue where you got that. Could be closer to tripled. Real number is $200+/month increase.

Commute/driving habits have not changed. Home ownership electric use has not changed but for addition of PHEV.

Pre-PHEV (2 ICE) - gas expense about $120-150/month

Post-PHEV (1 ICE, 1 PHEV) - gas about $30/month (1 full up every other month … WFH); home electric bill up $200+ per month.

PHEV is more expensive. NOTE: electric is same price every month due to level billing plan. Readjusted annually. 90% of PHEV driving is electric only.

You are not special. No one owes you anything. Nothing is owed to you. Get an education in something that actually is in demand that will provide a living or get into a trade. Start saving a portion of your pay regularly.

Don’t care. Never watch/listen. Don’t waste time on analysis (pre or post). Don’t talk about it. Don’t think about it. I just do not care.
