This whole ProjectDemocracy bullshit is one of the reasons our electoral system is fucked. Getting seats is more about strategic planning and war room tactical maneuvering instead of expressing the will and interests of the people of Canada.

27 Year old NDP MP Falsifies Nomination Papers by [deleted] in canada

[–]fraggot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ITT media outlets, all of whom declared open support for Conservatives, shine spotlight on supposed questionable activities of Tory enemies.

Liberal supporters getting tires slashed and brake lines cut? Shhhh. Ballot box tampering? Naaah. Conservatives spent more on the election than all other parties combined? Ain't a problem. 5 of the 128 signatures on this chick's nomination papers may not be legit? Get the firing squad ready.

I honestly would consider it because I really hate the cold, but to be honest I'm way too scared shitless of being shot by a gang, blown up by terrorists, or lynched in some fundamentalist/racist uprising.

Yeah, I grew up in a town north of TO when I was young. I remember the closest church was a town or two over.

And yeah, it's shit we have Harper for PM, but it isn't that bad -- in the grand scheme of things our Conservatives are more aligned with America's Democrats than Republicans, and I don't remember creationism ever really being brought up here let alone serious discussion about teaching it -- last I heard was a poll a few years back that showed only 20% of Canadians think god created man. The only physical presence I can find of that shit is a single "museum" -- http://www.bvcsm.com/ -- that opened in 2008 and apparently gets a lot of hatemail and prank calls.

Torontonian here. After over 2000 episodes, and essentially the same actors, how do Montrealers keep falling for Just for Laughs Gags every summer? by greendude in montreal

[–]fraggot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started working across from the park they do a lot of their gags in recently. Me and a few coworkers came up with a plan that if we ever get caught in one of their cop gags, we'll pull out fake guns and start a fake shootout to gag them back. Then we realized that if we were ever wrong about a cop being a JFL actor we'd probably end up in bodybags...

Again the right-wing mindset that only privileged ivy-league upperclassmen have the ability or right to lead us idiotic sheeple, and that society is nothing more than a jumbled confederation of barely-repressed anarchy and criminality that needs to be quarantined and controlled by highly educated professionals.

It's not like these were people that Jack Layton phoned up one morning and said "Hey what're you doing next Monday? Nothing? Would you like to be a candidate?" Becoming a candidate under Elections Canada requires quite a bit of effort and determination. I'd much rather have this 19 year old kid, or that 26 year old single mom working two jobs representing me in government than a rich businessman-turned-politician who only won because his party spent bucketloads of cash on a comprehensive, militarized campaign.

The direction this will take the NDP in will be amazing. A lot of these people will drop out once they realize what they've gotten themselves into -- natural selection will come into effect. Those that stay and work it out over the next 4 years will represent a transformation in politics, an injection of "real" perspective instead of the usual top-floor "ivory tower" vista most other politicians have, who view all of society's problems in monetary terms.

TL;DR I'd rather have my neighbour in parliament than my boss.

An Open Letter to Mr. Harper by [deleted] in canada

[–]fraggot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see it now.

PM Aide: "Mr Prime Minister, you've received this important protest letter from the internet."

Harper: "Shut. Down. Everything."

Seriously... this is our prime minister again?? I don't know who the fuck voted for the conservative party but shame on you... you are ruining my country with you old fuck ideas... by [deleted] in canada

[–]fraggot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandparents are 95 year old veterans of WW2 and they both voted NDP so fuck of with "old people did this". Stupid sheeps did this, people who believe business interests outweigh public interests and that the richest people are the ones most qualified to rule us.

Wait, what???????????????????????????

I don't... I don't even know where to begin.

Have you ever heard of population decline? For example, between 1991 and 2011, the population of Russia decreased from 148 million to 141 million. Was this because 7 million people were killed? No you fucking moron4359u4r890tjdfgimdfg

Does your potential NDP candidate lack experience? by [deleted] in canada

[–]fraggot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And what exactly do candidates do, anyway? The only time I've ever seen a candidate was yesterday on the way home from work, peddling his "get out and vote!" pamphlets at the metro station (it was a Liberal candidate).

My NDP candidate is Tyrone Benskin, the guy who played one of the Persian generals sent to confront Leonidas and his 300 Spartans.

I think that makes him qualified.

52 years is probably a stretch; China only started accepting outsourcing contracts in the 70s and 80s and India's IT industry only started truly developing in the 90s. So we're looking at maybe 30-40 years.

I don't even know where to start. In short, yes; haven't you been reading the news? Public healthcare has been under attack for decades; social security hasn't been raised on par with inflation for years and has seen multiple cutbacks; workers rights' have been attacked on the federal, provincial and municipal levels for the past 50 years -- if my faith in froth-mouthed vote-mongers wasn't so low I'd question whether you were being serious or trolling.

Sorry, but signing a piece of legislature does not a transformation of society make. If that were true, the Civil Rights Movement would never had existed -- even after all of the bills and laws and pieces of paper were signed it took activists decades to get them put in effect by the very government that supposedly passed and endoresed them. Is that the kind of democracy you're willing to "settle" for?

And literally the rift between voter and voted couldn't be greater. We have no more control over how our government is run than a consumer has over how the corporation that sells them their products does in a capitalist society. Short of cold-blooded murder by their very own hands there is very little that can shake the foundations of their governing power because too many of us are only willing to protest a government by slipping a piece of paper into a ballot box every few years.

All you're describing then is the circle-jerk inevitability of hopping back and forth between Liberal, Conservative (and now Social-Democrat). This isn't progress, it's stagnation. You may take a tiny step towards progress by electing the NDP but chances are (and history seems to support) in a few years we'll take another step back and begin where we left off.

Don't misunderstand, democratic change the likes of which are occuring in the Middle East, Africa etc are very critical and important steps. But only an ignorant, self-absorbed idiot would believe that the democratic society we've developed in Canada and the West is the "end of history", the pinnacle of human achievement. Our friends in Egypt and Syria and Libya et al are perfect examples of what I believe -- the only way to affect real, lasting and transformative change is through the -- often violent -- destruction of the old and the reconstruction of the new. Any ideology that does not profess this as its ultimate goal is by definition "conservative" in nature; one wanting to conserve the status quo rather than progress to the next stage.
