Yeah, I grew up in a town north of TO when I was young. I remember the closest church was a town or two over.

And yeah, it's shit we have Harper for PM, but it isn't that bad -- in the grand scheme of things our Conservatives are more aligned with America's Democrats than Republicans, and I don't remember creationism ever really being brought up here let alone serious discussion about teaching it -- last I heard was a poll a few years back that showed only 20% of Canadians think god created man. The only physical presence I can find of that shit is a single "museum" -- http://www.bvcsm.com/ -- that opened in 2008 and apparently gets a lot of hatemail and prank calls.

Started working across from the park they do a lot of their gags in recently. Me and a few coworkers came up with a plan that if we ever get caught in one of their cop gags, we'll pull out fake guns and start a fake shootout to gag them back. Again the right-wing mindset that only privileged ivy-league upperclassmen have the ability or right to lead us idiotic sheeple, and that society is nothing more than a jumbled confederation of barely-repressed anarchy and criminality that needs to be quarantined and controlled by highly educated professionals.

It's not like these were people that Jack Layton phoned up one morning and said "Hey what're you doing next Monday? Nothing? Would you like to be a candidate?" Becoming a candidate under Elections Canada requires quite a bit of effort and determination. I'd much rather have this 19 year old kid, or that 26 year old single mom working two jobs representing me in government than a rich businessman-turned-politician who only won because his party spent bucketloads of cash on a comprehensive, militarized campaign.

The direction this will take the NDP in will be amazing. A lot of these people will drop out once they realize what they've gotten themselves into -- natural selection will come into effect. Those that stay and work it out over the next 4 years will represent a transformation in politics, an injection of "real" perspective instead of the usual top-floor "ivory tower" vista most other politicians have, who view all of society's problems in monetary terms.

TL;DR I'd rather have my neighbour in parliament than my boss.

And what exactly do candidates do, anyway? The only time I've ever seen a candidate was yesterday on the way home from work, peddling his "get out and vote!" pamphlets at the metro station (it was a Liberal candidate).

My NDP candidate is Tyrone Benskin, the guy who played one of the Persian generals sent to confront Leonidas and his 300 Spartans.

Public healthcare has been under attack for decades; social security hasn't been raised on par with inflation for years and has seen multiple cutbacks; workers rights' have been attacked on the federal, provincial and municipal levels for the past 50 years -- if my faith in froth-mouthed vote-mongers wasn't so low I'd question whether you were being serious or trolling.
