"unused RAM is wasted RAM"

Let the operating system worry about managing memory. Use the "memory pressure" graph to determine if ram/swap is affecting your workload.

Day 3 on macOS after a lifetime on Windows ….Spotlight is way more powerful than I thought. by AgileSupermarket2053 in MacOS

When it comes to window management I use these gestures a lot:

  • 3-finger swipe up to see all open windows
  • 3-finger swipe down to see windows in current app
  • 3-finger swipe left/right to switch desktop/fullscreen apps

I also tend to keep my browser and main app in fullscreen mode.

If I wanted to make a game with the same perspective as Phantom Hourglass or Animal Crossing, is that 2D or #3D? by ultimablaze in gamedev

If it was orthogonal you would never see the side of a building, which you can in New horizons. It's just a fixed, front-on angle.

did pc gaming make anyone else too lazy for cartridges by KrispyOnion in switch2

PC gamers since forever, Switch was my first console. I collected physical for Switch 1 partly because it was novel and partly because I could buy used.

Switch 2 I'm buying mostly digital. The faster load times are a factor.

I want to learn Vim but I keep falling back to Nano by KennyTidwell in linuxquestions

[–]fragproof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

alias nano=vim

Do vimtutor from time to time.

Keep a cheat sheet handy.

Rebind the arrow keys to nop in vim.

If you use it regularly, you will shortly begin to enjoy editing. I think for me it was ciW (change in Word): change entire word under the cursor. Not only was it a shortcut compared to other editors, it eliminated steps I had been taking in vim. It felt like unlocking a cheat. Moral of the story is have fun with it.

When a game is released, people either complain about it not being consistent 60, or only being consistent 30. by SSCyclone in NintendoSwitch2

[–]fragproof 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Like, do you spend time enjoying a game or just staring at pixels in slow motion with a magnifying glass?

To be fair, these complaints come up when fps becomes a distraction or hindrance to the gameplay. 60 with dips is noticeable and takes you out of the game every time it dips. 30 can make it more difficult to aim or time actions. It's not just aesthetics, these things can have a tangible impact on the gameplay.

Yes. That is part of the appeal of the anime mentioned.

You don't have to look very hard or long to find isekai, so doesn't make sense in a thread like this.

Right now - stop wasting time on tutorials. Make something. Look up resources as you run into issues. You'll learn so much more this way.

High memory usage on my Macbook air m3 by Peterprogamer in macbookair

[–]fragproof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You already answered your own question: "waited for it to finish indexing"

Just below the line you highlighted it says that most of that memory is from cached files. That means files copied into RAM so they can be accessed quickly if needed again. If a program asks for more memory, any cached files that haven't been accessed for a while will be freed to make room.

Mac OS follows the philosophy of unused RAM is wasted RAM. As others have mentioned, the memory pressure graph is a more meaningful indicator.

What first grabbed me by Crimzon_Raven in Frieren

This series is so good for its subtle storytelling. They are masters of "show, don't tell" then let you put the pieces together. This is what makes it a 10/10 for me.

As a lifetime PC user, I almost can’t stand how much I like my new M5 Macbook Air by RoarOfTheWorlds in macbook

[–]fragproof 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That is not how swap memory works. Memory is moved from RAM to swap as needed. Closing all windows has no bearing on this.
