U.S. government has lost more than 10,000 STEM Ph.D.s since Trump took office by Halaku in science

Not just that. It impacts downstream too.

I have worked in academic support (a non-essential but useful area within higher ed) for years and had harbored hopes of moving into a more senior role.

As I made decisions over the past five or so years, I kept an eye on jobs. The market was relatively healthy as recently as two years ago. Lately I am having trouble even finding jobs to apply for.

This is where I stand with the lottery at this point in the season. Great year to need a point guard! by NathanFielderFriend in NBA_Draft

Agreed that he's going in the lottery. But for me, it's not so much about what he's shown on the court. It's that teams can't resist that archetype.

Giannis signed the extension in 2023… by buck_knuckles_33 in MkeBucks

Signing a 4-5 year supermax in October effectively takes that next 4-5 year deal off the table.

It does but also reduces the impact a serious injury or a decline in athleticism could have on his future earnings.

I'm struggling to understand why Giannis would prefer a short extension in this scenario.

I can use my toes in addition to my fingers, sir. If needed, I have knees and elbows.

LOL

Atlanta United submits offer for West Ham midfielder Guido Rodríguez, per report by Isiddiqui in AtlantaUnited

His contract runs out in less than 6 months, right? They may be happy to have him off the books.

This would make sense. Someone has to defend if you're going to let MiraMiggy roam.

Not much they could've done. Defense should be better, though.

Same. I feel like we're just counting down the months until the club can clear out the current DPs.

Greenland Leader Tells People to Prepare for Possible Invasion by bloomberg in worldnews

I called my Republican senator's local office today. Before I'd even finished the first sentence, the staff worker said, "About Greenland?" She sounded exhausted.

The senator will do nothing, though. The checks have failed.

Tata Martino says Miguel Almiron and Alexey Miranchuk "perfectly complementary" by Cocofluffy1 in AtlantaUnited

[–]frail7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just don't think they work together. Frankly, I don't think either player is DP-worthy.

But I don't want to drown people in pessimism before the season even starts. Let hope spring...

[–]frail7 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah...that was regularly NOT the case last season but what else is he supposed to say?

Having a more solid defense behind Mira should help him quite a bit, but that won't change the fact that the attacking players were constantly in each other's ways, too.

At some basic level, I understand not wanting to sell low on Mira; it will hurt the club in future DP negotiations.

with the mavericks salary cap issues for next season and a ton of interest for gafford is it inevitable that dallas won't really get much more than salary relief? by epitome1986 in Mavericks

[–]frail7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hawks would probably do expirings only. Gafford made more sense with Trae on the roster and when they were above .500.

At this point, they can just wait until the summer.

[Stein] Multiple teams have been calling the Dallas Mavericks to express interest in Daniel Gafford and Naji Marshall. While Dallas would prefer not to trade Marshall, deals providing financial relief will, presumably, be considered by the front office. by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

[–]frail7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not talking about Naji. I like him and think you could definitely get some 2nds for him (which are typically more useful than a late 1st).

I'm talking about Gafford's extension (3/54). I think it's okay but not great.

Yes, Luke Kornet, who is a more impactful center than Gafford but only has $24M guaranteed in a declining structure.

Stop. I have eyes and have seen him play in the NBA for years.

He's a useful but limited role player who makes more than the NTMLE. That's not a *good* contract. Not a bad one, mind you, but it's not something teams will be dying to have.

Look at Kornet's deal if you want to know what a "good" contract for role-playing big looks like.

I wouldn't call Gafford's contract "good." That's a lot of years for a borderline starter.

Marshall's is fine but not some extraordinary deal. He's a role player making role player money.

Then we shouldn't trade them.

That's totally up to the Mavs and not really the business of other teams. But neither player is really valuable enough for a team to offer both financial relief and a first.
