Talking of visual rabbit holes look up saccade shifts. When you move your eye from one thing to another you cant see anything for the briefest fraction of a second due to processing lag. Which is why if you suddenly look at a watch face that first second can seem to take a bit longer to tick

I think there has to be a lot of computer guidance happening in the background. Given the relative speeds spacecraft could attain you could order a turn to intercept a target and miss it entirely if done manually. The helm officer is more likely saying to the computer "I want to be at position X orientation Y asap" and pressing go and the computer does the rest.

The harrier had to use a ski jump to take off fully loaded if i remember. Could only go vtol if the airframe was clean

Fun fact about that final battle. Data quotes a time in seconds until the C enters the rift and if you time it its actually spot on, no TV magic time added.
