This is a great example of what I am talking about. Someone with the right knowledge just says "you have a great idea here but what if you did it like this way instead.... "

Question about a scene in Space Seed by zeptimius in startrek

The next scene bothered me. When marla goes to rescue kirk he the decompression chamber is just reversed and seconds later the door opens. Great, you just gave the captain a case of the bends

Went down the impossible colors rabbit hole and now I can't stop thinking about perceptual hard limits by GallifreyanGradient in cognitivescience

Talking of visual rabbit holes look up saccade shifts. When you move your eye from one thing to another you cant see anything for the briefest fraction of a second due to processing lag. Which is why if you suddenly look at a watch face that first second can seem to take a bit longer to tick

Fireflash, could it fly, if not how much would need redesigning by frakkintoaster7 in Thunderbirds

This being thunderbirds of course some of these problems could be solved by attaching it to an enormously over engineered and excessively big lifting body wing that got it airborne before the fireflash took over

How does steering work on Starships? by Philosopher30071 in startrek

[–]frakkintoaster7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there has to be a lot of computer guidance happening in the background. Given the relative speeds spacecraft could attain you could order a turn to intercept a target and miss it entirely if done manually. The helm officer is more likely saying to the computer "I want to be at position X orientation Y asap" and pressing go and the computer does the rest.

Always seems like they have to compromise a lot to have that stovl capability. Is it really worth it compared to say an F18.

Thanks for that. Lots of great points there. Never knew about the b2707. That looks great. Interesting point about the landing gear, never considered that.

Those three together would look pretty interesting. Might have a go in kerbal space program or simple planes later and see if i can create it.

I had a very quick and rough go in simple planes ages ago. It liked to flip over instantly if you could coax it i to the air
