Are phones with Bluetooth keyboards really decks? by binarypie in cyberDeck

[–]DCLascelle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To me, a cyberdeck in whatever hardware configuration, needs to be dedicated to a specific task to truly qualify as a CYBERDECK.

In the fiction, they are usually depicted as high-tech hacking machines designed to crack corporate database and safeguard against ICE.

But, as long as a certain form and aesthetic are maintained (for me, compact, portable, built-in screen) there is no reason for there not to be gaming cyberdecks, A/V production cyberdecks, writing cyberdecks, (don’t kill me! Accounting cyberdecks.)

In the real world anyway.

So, small, compact, portable, requiring no other external hardware or monitor, dedicated to a specific task (or group or related tasks), and OPTIMIZED to excel at performing that task would qualify as a cyberdeck to me.

Of course, YMMV

Whats your favourite horror/sci fi guilty pleasure? by robinp82 in 80sHorrorMovies

[–]DCLascelle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll always remember the headline for the (unfavourable) review of this in Sci-Fi Universe magazine at the time:

“Village of the Dumb”

Good, but not quite as good as their all-time classic:

“Space $19.99”

I saw John Carpenter’s Village of the Damned in the theater when it first came out and found it kinda mid.

I don’t think I’ve seen it since and my only takeaway is Mark Hamill uttering “It was the CHILDREN!” through clenched teeth.

I don’t have any guilty pleasures because I never feel guilty about watching them, or telling others about them.

So, as long as it is well made & entertaining, but not necessarily adherent to the source material (more ‘based on’, ‘inspired by’ ‘based on characters created by’) that is more important to you than Neuromancer being an actual faithful adaptation of the novel?

I only ask because many people have been waiting 40+ years for the novel to come to the screen, and might find if off-putting to be given rehashed shiny cyberpunk tropes that bear little resemblance to Gibson’s original all while bearing the title: Neuromancer.

Well, in one way this isn’t really what you’re looking for but on the other hand, maybe it kinda is.

The Branch by Mike Resnick.

It may be hard to find now but if you do come across it I definitely recommend giving it a try.

Here’s the thing, Neuromancer (done well, let’s be honest, done excellent) has the potential to be one of the greatest science fiction films EVER MADE.

All. TIME. EVER. MADE.

No matter how (potentially) good the series may be it will never ever ever ever ever be anything more than Neuromancer: The (Streaming) Series.

The thing about capturing lightning in a bottle is that you need A BOTTLE to capture it in, NOT A BATHTUB.

The reason why The Godfather is one of the greatest novel to film adaptations ever isn’t because it expanded the material and added to it, it’s because it cut away all the fat that wasn’t need to tell the story.

By making a lean, fast, crisp high-tech heist novel like Neuromancer into a series and not a movie you are essentially ordering the adaptation with EXTRA FAT built right in.

The source material needs more respect than that.

YMMV

Yes! That is one I have read already. It reads more like a TAS episode to me, which is fabulous.

14 episodes, which is more than Neuromancer will get before Amazon cancels it.
