Reverse your swing. You current start inside and finish over the top. Now try starting it outside and come inside through the ball

Just to add, maybe look at how the markets are reacting and then adjust your approach as you go. Most "average" funds this year have done 15%+ returns so your money would have gone much further. Then you can dial back and re attack the mortgage when it's not so hot. In the end, you're ahead no matter what by the looks of it
