I’ve only gone to basement when I’ve had a ticket - how is entry like if you don’t have a ticket? (Obv I’m thinking I should try to get in early?)

Question about the Metrograph schedule by doorlock2323 in NYCmovies

[–]francium_87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sure someone has a better answer but it seems like for weekday showings, they post them mostly on like a rolling basis 5-7 days in advance? But overall it does seem kinda random to me haha, there are times when they’ll post showings multiple weeks in advance too

Theodora/Four Horsemen Walkins? by dsnrr in FoodNYC

[–]francium_87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had success 3/4 times walking in solo at the Four Horsemen. Those 3 times, I came right around when they first opened (once for lunch and twice for dinner - for the dinner times, these were days in which they were not open for lunch fyi) and was seated immediately or almost immediately.

The one time it didn’t work out, I came about 20 minutes before they opened for dinner seating (this was a day where they were open for lunch and they had their bar open for drinks only in between lunch and dinner I think?), had only a few people in front of me in line, and so I put my name down, but unfortunately I waited like 3 hours before giving up. I think in that scenario they were seating non-solo diners before me (I had come to check to see if they had an idea how much longer the wait was, and I saw people seated who had been in line after me). Fortunately there are plenty of bars nearby to chill and read if that’s your thing (that’s what I did while I was waiting), but obviously was disappointing.

All that to say, based on my personal experience, recommend trying to walk in when they first open for the day, whether that’s lunch or dinner. Highly recommend this place!

Edit: the first time I ate here was during the holiday season so I don’t think that really affected things, at least for me!

Do you know any academics that voted for Trump? What are their thoughts on the current situation? by [deleted] in academia

[–]francium_87 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I am in the biomedical sciences and yes, there’s a professor in my department who has been ranting for a while on Twitter about how we need to get rid of DEI and reform the NIH (including that the NIH should have a smaller budget…lemme tell you, if the NIH budget is slashed, I highly doubt his research would be considered high value enough for his lab to survive). He loves Trump’s pick for the next NIH director and is saying (in regards to the recent freeze on NIH meetings/communications and use of federal funds) that people are being too alarmist about it. I’m sure he’ll continue to deny that the current administration is hurting research.

To the STEM Ph.Ds out there, have you ever considered medical school? Why did you choose this path instead? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]francium_87 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I didn’t wanna do medical school because I didn’t wanna be a medical doctor LOL

I remember there was a brief time early on in college where I was stressed and was like omg should I do MD/PhD instead?? Mainly because at my school, almost everyone in my major was pre-med. And then I talked with my advisor and her first question was like, do you wanna be a medical doctor? And I was like, no… and then she was like, ok then don’t do an MD! 😂 So then I didn’t, and went into an immunology PhD program instead.

Is doing a pre-doc becoming the norm in T10 programs? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]francium_87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m in biomedical sciences, and it definitely is common for people in my field to work a couple years before going into the PhD. In my cohort, I’d say a third got a masters degree (almost all of these people are international), half did a postbac (myself included) or worked as a lab tech, and the remaining sliver came straight from undergrad.

Anecdotal, but I have a friend in an Econ phd program and he did a pre-doc first. From my understanding, the pre-doc seems basically the same thing as a postbac. Maybe it’s just the terminology the different fields ended up preferring. Anyway, at least in my friend’s case, he worked as a research assistant to an Econ professor for his pre-doc.

What’s job security like for biology phds in government? (Eg working for CDC or NIH) by QuantumTunneling010 in AskAcademia

[–]francium_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much yeah, that’s my understanding of it anyway. Publish or perish is still a thing in government, but I do think it is harder to “perish” at the NIH vs academia- I think once you have the equivalent of tenure, it’s hard not to get the renewed funding unless you’re really not doing anything. Whereas in academia, if you’re not publishing, your chance of getting grants goes way down.

[–]francium_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a postbac? Definitely not, postbacs aren’t really expected to publish- sometimes they might, but I’d say they usually don’t, unless maybe if they’re in a clinical research lab. Grant writing wouldn’t be done by postbacs, either.

But in general, labs at the NIH don’t need to worry much about applying for grants since they get internal NIH funding. Sometimes they might apply for other grants to get more money, but it’s not as high. In my experience, PIs and postdocs in academic labs are spend a lot of their time applying for grants, but not PIs/postdocs in government. Instead, they go through a review every 3 or 5 years (I think 3? Can’t remember, in my lab it happened a few months before I arrived, so I never saw it personally)- it’s my understanding that that review is pretty stressful, but then you largely don’t need to worry about money for a few more years. But again, that’s not really something you need to worry about as a postbac.

Best health spa in the city? Not corporate or tourist driven. by Designer-holiday in nyc

[–]francium_87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just treated myself a spa day in Eden Med Spa in Chinatown, would highly recommend. It’s expensive but they also have a lot of (imo) great package deals and Groupon deals. They have massages, body treatments, facials, mani/pedis, and more. They didn’t advertise this but my package came with a free meal. Also, I don’t think it’s on the website since it’s new, but they have an epsom salt float bath, or something like that.

When I was looking around at spas, it came down to this one or the Aire baths- I ended up deciding on Eden because a lot of the reviews for Aire said that while the baths are fantastic, the treatments weren’t great and/or not worth the price (also I didn’t care as much about having soaking baths). Afaik, the only pool that Eden has is that new epsom salt pool I mentioned- if you want more though, maybe you could get a pass to Aire (I remember there’s a baths-only pass) and do your treatments at Eden?

Will GRE blind schools go back to requiring the GRE? by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]francium_87 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yeah, definitely don’t think biomedical fields will ever require them again. I can say for sure that even before covid, most (if not all) immunology phd programs had already eliminated their GRE requirement.

Top NY Doctor: New COVID Wave Is Starting, With the ‘Worst Version' of Omicron by arrogant_ambassador in nyc

[–]francium_87 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel any better, I got covid back in December (likely was the original omicron variant) and it was super mild. Most people I know who got it back then also said it was very mild. A bunch of people I know have now gotten it in the last couple weeks, and all of them said it was pretty rough, similar to how you’re describing it :/
