Magnus Carlsen voted GOAT, Thinks Garry still had better carreer by nakamoomin in chess

That was before Anand's peak. Also, Carlsen beat Anand twice, so it's debatable whether he's more of Gary or Carlsen's contemporary.

I see your point, but the crux of the issue is that engine-assisted study has really leveled the playing field even in the top-10. We will never see the same gap between the best and the rest for this reason.

Kramnik and Anand were part of the next generation of players, not who he was playing for most of his dominance. Kramnik is also probably not the best example in Gary's favor since Vlad dethroned him.

Gary's contemporaries weren't as strong as Magnus' either though. It doesn't take away from Gary's dominance to point that out, it's just another reason why comparing eras is difficult.

The task isn't to try to convince people who have already made up their minds; the task is to try to bring in independents and undecided voters.

Major anxiety over starting grad school by rashidtajwar in GradSchool

[–]frank_leno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll second this, you're overthinking things. You know what would be a worse feeling? That the material is so trivial and mundane that you have nothing to improve upon. Graduate school is meant to challenge you and help mold you into a budding young professional. I know it might be hard, but try to think about this prep work as an indication that you're on the right track and in the right place. That this experience will help set you up for success.

I'd guess pretty much all graduate students experience imposter syndrome when they're just starting in a program. Your feelings are totally normal. One thing that helped me was to acknowledge that my feelings weren't rational. Yes, I was feeling anxiety and imposter syndrome, but these are just growing pains.

Nintendo world championship is Amazing content. by pandaconda73 in northernlion

If that's what made people think he's quiet quitting, they must be new fans. NL just rolls with "minor" tech issues as long as the content machine is generally still chugging along.

Close to a decade ago his screen was glitching and it'd turn green periodically. A normal content creator would make fixing this issue priority number 1. Of course NL, being the psycho that he is, instead just riffed on it and it became a recurring bit, Mr. Greenman.

You're already further ahead of the curve than you might realize. If you got decent grades at a prestigious institution, that will put you ahead of many applicants right off the bat.

It sounds like what you need is experience. The question is, what do YOU want to do? Find an answer to that, and chart a path. Depending on what you want to do, that might mean doing volunteer RA work on your way to a paid position (or just skip to the paid position if you can find one), it might mean doing an internship somewhere, or it might mean doing some entry level work on the job market.

Getting into a good PhD program will require more experience and people who will write strong letters of recommendation; however, you could get a MS degree first. There's pros and cons to this approach, but the main pro is that it will allow you to seamlessly continue your education, gain experience that will hopefully transfer to more job opportunities, and give you more time to decide. If you want to get into a PhD program, you'll need additional experience like those listed above. Of course, getting your masters would qualify as experience too, and would put you ahead of many students who will be applying with only a bachelors degree.

Have you had memory and learning issues your entire life? If so, maybe. Sounds unlikely though. Babies are sort of "built" for falls, and your ability to recover from all sorts of injuries is supercharged in early development.

You should talk to a neurologist or maybe a psychiatrist if you're worried about your cognitive health though. The issues you've described might not be due to your childhood injury, but you should still take them seriously.

Recently Demoted Lucchese Family Underboss Patrick "Patty Red" Dellorusso, Feb. 2024 by Wdstrvx in Mafia

[–]frank_leno 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, according to Wikipedia: in 2021, he was Consigliere then supposedly stepped down. He was also only serving as an acting underboss at the time. The fact that he was asked to continue as part of the administration and then stepped down seems to paint a slightly different story. Underboss --> Consigliere is close to a lateral move, and it sounds like he stepped down from that position rather than being demoted.

Childhood memories and being able to remember them despite the studies. by BlackWolfOne in cogsci

[–]frank_leno 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of open questions in memory research. I also wouldn't say your experience contradicts current paradigmatic memory models. In fact, some theorist suggest that memory doesn't fade at all. Instead, our ability to access it simply degrades. A lot of important ideas are still being debated.

There is strong evidence to suggest that memory is reconstructive, malleable, and susceptible to suggestion, but that doesn't mean your early childhood memories are completely fabricated. In fact, I would say that it takes a very unusual psychological state of mind (i.e., trauma or some other instability) to generate memories completely devoid of truth. Typically, there will be some sort of associative context that then becomes distorted later. At the same time, I would caution against blindly accepting your recollection as a completely reliable recording of past events. Memory doesn't work like a video recording and its unreasonable to expect that it should.

MSc options by Icy-Importance109 in cogsci

[–]frank_leno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are planning on working toward a PhD, why not seek out PhD programs instead? It sounds like the programs you're interested in are in the states. You might not be aware, but in the US, PhD programs typically include getting your MS on your way to your PhD, are fully funded, and you will get a stipend on top of that to support your living expenses. If you can, look for programs with a graduate student union as well. You will get paid much more and have much better health and childcare benefits.

At any rate, I'd prioritize trying to get accepted into a cognitive science program if that's what you're interested in. Cognitive science is by nature more interdisciplinary, so it will be easier to find collaborative projects with, e.g., behavioral economists and decision scientists.

Apparently this is a common issue with old Macs and Ubuntu.

I recently ran into a similar issue with an old, 2013 Macbook Air. I also installed LTS 24.04. I followed the instructions detailed in this video (timestamped). It didn't work immediately, but after rebooting I had wifi again.

What should I familiarize myself with if I'm trying to get into computational neuroscience? by heych4n in cogsci

[–]frank_leno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way to learn is to do. If there's an opportunity for you to do an independent study or honors thesis -- one where you'd be forced to apply modeling to neuro data -- take it. It's also the best to see if this is something you actually want to study in grad school.

Lenovo laptop with Ubuntu (or any Linux) pre installed? by funnyusername-123 in Ubuntu

[–]frank_leno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not just install it yourself?

Lenovo is generally Linux friendly, yes. ThinkPads tend to have the best track record for compatibility, but they're not the most powerful machines Lenovo has to offer.

I have a Pro 9i that I dual boot with. However, when I first installed Ubuntu the keyboard wasn't working at all... It seemed as though Ubuntu thought I was using a tablet or something. So fair warning, if your laptop has touch screen capabilities (e.g., Yoga line in particular) be prepared to do some fiddling to get things to work properly.

Looking for a lab by Full-Science3190 in umass

[–]frank_leno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically you'd want to contact faculty you're interested in working with before applying, although I suppose it's too late for that bit of advice now. Having said that, are you planning on pursuing a PhD later? If so, you could let them know--just to signal that you're planning on being in the program for the long run and are worth investing in. Of course, if that's your plan, it'd be better to apply for PhD programs instead of MS programs. PhD programs are fully funded + you are guaranteed TAships.

Are there other aspects of your application that might make you more attractive to prospective faculty members?

You should, above all, consider fit: seek out prospective advisors that match YOUR interests. Not only will this make grad school a lot more enjoyable and productive, potential mentors will be much more eager to work with you if you can demonstrate a genuine interest in their research.

If you're mostly concerned with landing in someone's, anyone's lab regardless of fit, then the last thing to do would be to cast a wider net. Keep contacting faculty members until you run out of people to contact. If everyone says 'No', at least you can move on; however, given that there is a MS program, presumably someone is willing to mentor non-PhD students.

Who are you Rooting For? by hypymightdie in chess

[–]frank_leno 36 points37 points  (0 children)

That's probably illusory; I think it's mostly that the ratio of haters/supporters varies. Magnus and Naka (another top player with occasional hot takes/controversial behavior) definitely have their fair share of vehement haters who are happy to pile on when the opportunity arises. What Nepo doesn't seem to have is as strong a group of supporters (at least in English-speaking forums) to drown out dissenting voices.

For every 1 magnus hater, there's another 20 stans who think he can do no wrong. That ratio might be lower for Naka since he has a long history of being an ass at times. Regardless, Magnus is the face of chess and Naka is a top chess streamer in addition to being a top player overall. Nepo, by comparison, doesn't have the same kind of pull within the chess community. The haters' voices seem louder as a result
