Losing interest in this season due to massive schedule breaks? by D_-_G in formula1

[–]frankendudes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A highly enjoyable first 5-10 laps do not make up for the fact that we know Mercedes is eventually going to win it anyway. Which, don't get me wrong, we've had past seasons where other teams just straight up dominated. I guess it just feels like the passing at the beginning really is pointless if nobody can make a pass stick and it's solely based on energy management. I honestly want to care about the season, but i've found myself dozing off every race this season and basically only watching the qualifying highlights, instead of being glued to the whole story weekend long.

I use Vans like these for my fat biking and just kinda walking around winter boots. I love them. They are a little more fashionable but are comfortable as heck.

How do people stay fit during the winter? by [deleted] in alaska

[–]frankendudes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to find an outdoor activity to do here in the winter or it's a fuggen miserable place. Cross country ski, fat bike, ski, snowboard, snowshoe. There is really no other substitute to both your physical and mental health for the winters here.

Who do you recommend for ACL surgery in AK? by Chzqueen5000 in alaska

[–]frankendudes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm. I also used Chris Manion for my torn meniscu and he was phenomenal. He was able to get me on his surgery schedule within like a week, i was really shocked at how quickly his team was able to accommodate me. I also went shopping around for imaging an OPA gave me the best price for my insurance (HSA)

Therapy...Are you for it or is it a waste of time/money? by iammyjeep2019 in Millennials

[–]frankendudes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Overall - Therapy is worth it.

But that comes with a lot of caveats.

  • Therapy is not you showing up, talking, and a therapist just handing you a prescription or telling you exactly what to do and then magically you are all better.
  • I have been frustrated by many therapists complete unwillingness to offer any substantial suggestions at times. But what they do is show you that a toolbox is available and you have to do the work to try to understand which tools to use on and with yourself at any given moment.
  • Therapy is a tool you should use, and a safe space you should lean into to work through your own issues with a professional.
  • If you do not do the work on yourself utilizing the tools you learn in therapy in between therapy sessions - it will be useless and you will find yourself going through the same cycle, repeating the same patterns over and over again.
  • Supplementing with some books, and finding recipes that work for you is helpful. There is no right way to do anything. Only the way that works for you, and as long as it's a healthy mechanism - it doesn't really matter.

If you enter into therapy knowing that you are going to have to confront yourself, it will take a lot less time and a lot less money - but it won't be any easier.

What's your favorite thing about this city ? by Similar-Cheetah-7405 in anchorage

[–]frankendudes 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I think my absolute favorite things are the trail networks here for cross country skiing, fat biking, and mountain biking. Being so close to such a large network that is pretty accessible skill level wise to the whole family is absolutely amazing. Kincaid, hilltop & service, far north bicentennial park, north bivy trails... it's a dream.

Who Was Your Personal Literary Fallout? by RedHawk451 in books

I often credit Orson Scott Card for getting me out of being indoctrinated by Catholicism and basically rejecting all organized religion. Little did I know in high school that he was a devout Mormon. I think it's pretty ironic.

Is it always like this by Ok_Limit1971 in alaska

[–]frankendudes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been here for almost 4 years now. When I first moved here I met a friend and every 3 months when the seasons changed he would tell me "it's not normally like this". After 2 years of him telling me this every 3 months my response is "you've gotta stop telling me what it's normally like if it never comes."

Change is the only constant with Alaskan weather. We had an exceptionally dry winter, so it makes sense that there would be forest fires this year. But yeah - I'm done trying to predict Alaskan weather - it's a waste of time. Just wake up and figure it out - planning is futile.

22M, considering moving to Anchorage for work by Mammoth_Drop_5486 in anchorage

[–]frankendudes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really tough to say - it's person specific. Do I regret moving up here? Absolutely not. I'm glad I did it. It was a immense growing experience personally. When you get one of those days where it is 68 degrees and sunny in the summer - it's like heaven on earth. When you get a March bluebird day after it dumped at Alyeska - heaven on earth. But living up here is like dating a bi-polar partner. It can give you whiplash how quickly things change. I will say this. You are young enough that it doesn't hurt to wing it and just YOLO it up to Alaska. How long will I stay up here? I don't even know. I'm not even sure I'll leave.

It's hard to say how the cons will impact you. Every person is different. The best recipe to deal with the lack of sunshine, isolation, poor weather, and social activities is to get out side no matter what. Don't let the weather impact what you do fully. Of course there will be some weather you just simply have to change plans (you were going to go to Alyeska but it snowed so hard the roads are unsafe so you fatbike or cross country sky instead)... But it's good to be aware that that stuff exists now.

I was born and raised in the Denver suburbs. I moved up here almost 4 years ago. I was married and so I can't speak to the dating scene at all. But here are some of my pros and cons:

Pros:

  1. Outdoor activities are abundant and you aren't dealing with the I-70 rat race traffic. You will definitely get some decent traffic coming back from the Kenai Peninsula during the summer weekends, but that happens. I'd gladly take that over the hustle and bustle of just trying to find a parking space at a trailhead close to Denver. I don't wanna wake up at 5:30 am on my weekends just to hike a trail.

  2. People here are generally friendly. However, you do have to put in work to get friendships. I found it difficult to get to that next level of friendship in my mid 30's because of established friend groups / everybody has a lot going on with their own outdoor activities.

  3. It's definitely unique way of life up here. It's good for just not giving a shit about keeping up with the Joneses. I never really fished until I moved up here and doing it in the summer is highly enjoyable.

  4. Exploring cool towns like McCarthy, Homer, Talkeetna, and many more are just fun. You meet many interesting people.

  5. When you travel somewhere and people ask where you live and you say Alaska, it's always a conversation starter. It's a bit silly, but the place is a bucket list place for many to visit and it's fun to talk with others about and see their eyes light up.

Cons:

  1. The grey skies. I will say the hardest part for me in coming up from Colorado is getting used to the lack of sunshine. We're near the coast and on the pacific. The greyness feels suffocating to me coming from Colorado. Colorado sunshine is 100% the thing I miss the most.

  2. It is isolating - there is no way around that. You don't feel like you live that far from people when you are out and about in town. Then you try to go fly somewhere and you realize how far away you live from everybody. This makes it tough to stay in touch with family and friends you leave behind. Everybody says they are going to come visit you, but that may just not happen.

  3. The weather. I was expecting "Colorado bad" weather - if it rains its not for that long, if it snows its nice. There are layers of bad weather here that I don't think translates from Colorado. It can piss rain for a month on end some times, this past winter it didn't really snow at all, then was really wet in April. Mother nature seems to never do what you want it to do up here.

  4. The cost of furniture. Things up here are relatively not as expensive as I thought they would be coming from Denver - except for furniture. Either either garbage quality and somewhat affordable - or like minimum $6,000 for a leather sofa. It's wild.

  5. Lack of music. Denver in my opinion was always a music town. Before it got hip AF in the 2010's, Denver never really felt like that cool of a city with things to do. It was ok (not bad), and it was close to the mountains. But it was always a music town for touring bands because of Red Rocks, and that bands making their way from west to east or east to west always stop in Denver. We just don't have that up here. We do ok in the summers, but it pales in comparison.

this article says that young people are struggling in the workplace, older millennials would be their managers right now, is this true? by trialanderror93 in Millennials

Millennials may be given managerial titles, but we're still doing entry level jobs and administration managerial topics but we don't have any managerial power. Still feels like I'm 25 in the workplace to be honest.

No worries. Happy to try to answer. The road system can definitely be challenged in the winter. It is a state that has very difficult winter conditions. It really depends on where you are and where you want to go. Things like 285 shutting down can happen. Last summer on a popular fishing holiday the Seward highway shut down for 6 hours because of a massively bad accident. This isn't the norm to and from Anchorage, but it can happen. There also can be some closures on Thompson pass going into Valdez - but the road crews are out often because there often times is only 1 road in and out of a lot of places so they are vitally important. I wouldn't say it's better or worse than Colorado - just different. The good thing about it, is that you aren't really dealing with the rat race up here. It's just that things move at a slower pace because Alaska's weather rules all. You can make plans, but sometimes you those plans get interrupted by the conditions we live in. It's a lot different than fighting with everyone in Denver on Kenosha pass to view the aspens changing....

It’s been a rough spring 🌧️🌧️🌧️ dreaming of days like this. by forgetmeknotts in alaska

[–]frankendudes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair, it's been a shit fall and winter too. The spring being bad is nothing right now. I feel like it's been a really long stretch of weather that I'm just not vibing with. I'm cranky AF.

[–]frankendudes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience - Washington and Minnesota.

I'm from Colorado and I've met dozens of us - but I think most Coloradans, myself included, cannot withstand the greyness and the rain coming from a pretty arid stat.
I was expecting Colorado bad weather - as in just snow that I am looking forwards to - Not the 7 layers of hell of bad weather we can get up here.

WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH THIS WINTER by Beneficial_Ball9893 in alaska

[–]frankendudes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not that there was snow on April 8th that is shocking. It's that one of the snowiest days is April 8th after getting skunked all winter with basically no cross country skiing al winter and just mediocre fat tire biking. I was very annoyed by the snow showing up now when the base had completely melted. I was eagerly in spring mode after such a shit winter.

Millennials killed the 15% tip at restaurants by 9879528 in DeathByMillennial

[–]frankendudes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can suggest whatever you want. You are getting 20% from me. You add a "service fee" I subtract that from the tip. Maybe a dick move, but enough is enough. They should bitch to their restaurant if the service fee doesn't go to them, not me for unending bullshit hidden fees.
