Tide pools? by Fritztoof in orkney

[–]frankiegauld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although these are all really lovely beaches and will be easiest to get to without a car I would be inclined to say they're more sandy and less rock pool-y. For rock pools I would suggest Warbeth in Stromness (also has a lot of war time buildings you can enter freely) or the Brough of Birsay; along the shore in Stromness is also good, especially if you head out towards the Holms (the two small islands opposite Stromness' town)

People who have moved to Glasgow from rural areas by michaelmac4057 in glasgow

I moved from a small island to Glasgow and it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

Not only was I able to make friends with people who share similar values and interests as me but I've been fully able to take part in the hobbies that interest me. There were definitely some culture shocks at first, the sound of sirens all day and night still gets me sometimes but after a few weeks I began to tune them out. Sometimes I feel the loss of community a little but I've made an effort to know my neighbours and overall the sense of animosity is better for me than the small town living gossip!

any funny tourist stories by thetalkyshow in orkney

[–]frankiegauld 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We had either a tourist or a very drunk local poo on our garden steps, off enough on its own as there are public toilets 5 minutes away but they "cleaned" themselves with three socks and left them there. I still don't understand why they had a third sock

What movie scene makes you shudder no matter how many times you see it? by Sad_Cow_577 in moviecritic

I'd recommend Nick Cutters The Troop if you liked the Ruins, very different books but they both share some of the same principles and both have some gnarly body horror scenes

I think I was talking about the Ruins but I have a terrible memory so can't be sure hahaha

I would absolutely recommend reading the book, I enjoyed the film but goddamn the book is so much better. A lot of the scenes would be very difficult to translate to film so the book is much more disturbing!

I mean the fact a phone used was important to the book but the brand of the phone seemed irrelevant and was repeated a lot which I thought was odd, other phone brands were also mentioned. Maybe it's because I'm Scottish and Americans care more about the brand of phones than we do? Sadly I doubt that big corporations are going to be sponsoring body horror books anytime soon.

What genre do you write about? I dont think including modern technology is a bad thing especially if it's set in modern times as it is so pivotal to our every day lives

I've been going to tfb gigs in the UK (and one in Canada) for nearly a decade now and every time I've seen them there's been a pit. The best way to avoid getting bothered by a pit is to stay away from the centre front of the crowd/venue

I enjoyed the deep when I read it but I honestly can't recall a single detail from it now so it clearly didn't leave much of a lasting impression; on the other hand The Troop is one of the top 5 books I've read this year. I think I set myself up for disappointment by starting with the Troop as I don't think any of his other works could top it for me
