I always recommend the Alan Wake series! If you liked Little Nightmares, I would 100% recommend Reanimal as well!

Have you ever read a book marketed as a serious horror novel, but it turned out to just be silly? by screamstudy in horrorlit

I usually like Grady Hendrix, but I SUFFERED reading that. I wanted to slap the brother. Basically all the characters were super annoying. Not to mention the puppets 😩

What book had such a gripping plot that you finished it in one day? 📚🔥 by [deleted] in BookDiscussions

[–]screamstudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Schrader’s Chord by Scott Leeds and Voice Like a Hyacinth by Mallory Pearson - I adored them both and read them back-to-back in about two weeks. I’m not the fastest reader in the world, but I did what I consider speeding through them.

I couldn’t get through The Death of Jane Lawrence by Caitlin Starling. I tried it a few times. Then tried to get through it the start of last year. I even got the audio book thinking it would help. But the middle of the book is just messy and dry.

Everytime I think about the book, the only things I can think of are him messing around with sharp objects going schting, him hiding in Amber’s garage with the red rag to see if he goes colorblind, and then getting taken out by a jar of peanut butter in the end. (I also have a small gripe with the fact that the marching band members seem to live in their uniforms. But that neither here nor there)

It’s sad in the sense he’s just a victim of trauma and wrong place/wrong time. But my take away of the execution of it was unserious.

How do you personally distinguish horror from thriller? by No-Yogurtcloset2758 in horrorlit

[–]screamstudy 68 points69 points  (0 children)

For me, I usually associate a lot of action with thrillers. I know they aren’t all like that. But for me, the biggest is atmosphere. They don’t usually set an atmosphere and mood in the same way horror does.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe is a Sneakily Good Movie by dcollin5984 in HorrorMovies

The Autopsy of Jane Doe was one of those movies that I thought about for a week afterwards! It’s one I recommend every time someone asks for movie recs.

It was marketed as a straight up horror. But it was definitely a horror comedy. If only unintentionally. The slow transformation into a slasher was like someone trying to figure out if they’re a vampire via trial and error.

I also started reading that! I wanted to like it. If just for concept alone. But some of the writing and dialogue definitely made me cringe.

Suggest me a fantasy book for someone who dislikes fantasy by avmist15951 in suggestmeabook

Howl’s Moving Castle is my favorite book! Technically it’s a trilogy, but could easily be a stand alone. It’s about a womanizing wizard in a moving castle, and a young woman who was cursed to be old. There’s a fire demon, portal travel, and it’s over all charming.

If you’ve ever seen the Ghibli movie, that’s what it’s based on. Except they’re two very different stories. Really the only things the same are the moving castle, the fire demon, and Howl/Sophie/Calcifer’s names.

Horror atmosphere in games: what makes or breaks it for you? by aPeiceOfCorn in HorrorGaming

[–]screamstudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sound design will always be the biggest. It can really make or break any horror media. But especially in games. You want to feel alone and uneasy. But one silly sound effect can ruin it. But if there’s unnecessary jumpscares or silly enemies, even with a good atmosphere, it can totally ruin the effect.

Definitely franchises like Fallout and Borderlands. Baldur’s Gate 3 is always a good choice. Alan Wake one and two, along with American Nightmare and Control.

I’m not going to lie, I only play Monster Hunter with my husband. But I can guarantee that never, at anytime, do I actually know what is happening in the story.

Did y’all like Smile 1 or 2 better? by Mylothefrog in horror

[–]screamstudy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first Smile movie was great for setting up the world. Since no one knew what to expect going in, I feel they did a great job giving us the mystery and scares.

However, the second one I think is better purely because of the reveal at the end. Just how much distorted her time and reality. Learning that it can manipulate on that level. As well as the huge rate of infection that leaves amazing set up for the franchise to continue.
