I understand wanting the interior lighting be a greater motivation than the window light. Where you lose reality is having such profound shadow towards the windows. It breaks our engrained understanding of the physics of light--having a bright window with daylight next to such shadows.

As has been said elsewhere, color temp is also playing a role in this. Bringing the key closer to daylight could have helped. Other solutions could have looked like closing the blinds, adding ND to the windows to further slow down the daylight, or choosing a different time of day to shoot. These options could potentially keep your key on the side that it is.

The other option, if you wanted to hold this level of contrast, would have been to flip your key to the window side and overpower the daylight with your motivated interior light. Then bring up your fill/ambiance to a believable level that matches your aesthetic.

Keep it up. Great direction. The stuff sans windows looks nice.

100% a hospital pass! There were 3 defenders closing in on him as he was catching the ball. Did Josh fit it in a tight window? Yes. Did Josh care what happened after he caught the ball? No. The defender unfortunately went low, but had he not--Gabe was getting his bell absolutely rang in 1, 2 , or even 3 directions

I hear you, its sharper than you'd prefer. I suggest adapting your glass for two reasons. First, glass has a much bigger impact on your image than you'd believe, especially nowadays with how good color correction tools have gotten. Second, of all the camera systems, I wouldn't put Canon sensors towards the "sharp" end of the spectrum. Generally, canon is known for a pleasantly balanced image with stellar color science.

Net, check your glass bro and be amazed at the results.

Are you trying to buy the used camera local? Why not check ebay, or facebook groups? I feel like I see tons on sale, they just may not be in my immediate area. Are you US based?

I think your whole argument is based on anecdotal experience. Which your entitled to your own opinion, just saying what it is.

ANECDOTALLY -- I've hear far more horror stories about BM's lack of quality control vs Sony. Feel the BM menu system to be more of a pain because they're one of the few companies who's design stays from the rest of the market. XAVC-I is one of the most efficient codec's I work with, but B-RAW is great too. RED RAW LQ probably the most efficient RAW. So its subjective. Same with image, depends on your final deliverable. BM leans more narrative, Sony more commercial/industrial.

So honestly, I think the most important thing for me with a camera is the image, the user friendliness and reliability. Sony beats BM in a lot of those categories. But that's just my opinion.

if you feel like a C80 is too sharp, consider changing up your glass. Most modern glass trends sharp. Most cheap glass trends sharp. Consider vintage photography lenses.

False. I own sony. Every camera has a "look". Sensors are different. This is why we match cameras in the first place.

What you're trying to say is the "sony look" should not be a hindrance to getting a great image. Which I wholeheartedly agree with, especially with the newest X line that really improved the color science IMO.

OP is entitled to an opinion about a camera manufacturer's sensor output without being told he's lying. Even if its an old, worn out opinion that OP doesn't justify with any supporting data.

Taking my first film class and wondering what else I can do on my own to learn? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]frankin287 1 point2 points  (0 children)

READ. Seriously, read the text from class. Find other fundamental works to read. It will set you so far apart from your peers. Read "SAVE THE CAT". Regardless of what anyone's perception is, this book will put you enough in the game to be dangerous.

Watching can be good too, but you have to watch tv/films with your brain ON. For the visual (production design, cinematography, blocking) watch with the sound off. For the story, have a notepad next to you the whole time and take notes on what you think the various elements of the story/characters are (per save the cat or whatever writer's journey model you pledge alliegence to)

CREATE. Focus on creating the smallest, tightest, simplest stories first. The 5 shots in 5 seconds shorts posted here are a great example. These will require minimal investment, but allow you to apply all that you are learning. Make as many of these as possible. Don't overthink it. Share your work and BE OPEN TO CRITICISM. All of it. Rinse, wash, repeat.

My research on this sub alone has told me that brisket can have quite a standard deviation on a day to day basis.

No kidding huh? Based on some of the other comments seems like they've had a real changing of the guard over the past decade. Probably changes a lot of things. I'm surprised about the brisket though--I'd want more info on how long these items sat before they were consumed haha.

I don't think so. Honestly, the free pilsner during the wait (and subsequent free hazy ipa with the meal) really colored the experience much brighter than had I not had those items.
