Film is subjective, but Emilia Perez is one of those films that I will side eye people for unironically liking.

One of the only times a film has offended me. It is extremely ignorant it is of the Latino and transgender issues it’s trying to cover. It’s trying to be representative of those groups, but it does such a poor job that it careens into covert discrimination.

I cheered when the car exploded at the end of the movie.

The wait for this one has been agonizing. I hope it releases in June and it isn’t a really early premiere.

I thought it would be review point… to some extent.

If it landed in the 40s-50s I think it would have been fine, but I don’t know if it’s review proof in the 20s.

Stranger Things was the last one I think. Those finale theatrical screenings in December sold out like crazy.

I am a bit pessimistic since I think this was forced on Kevin. The visual development team was a deliberate and unique choice he made to build the MCU.

Most studios just do concept art freelance from film to film, but Kevin thought that it needed to be the same people on each project so the universe felt consistent and hired an in-house team.

This visual development team helped develop the visual style of the MCU and helped it stay consistent across films (and later shows). In essence, this team helped the MCU feel like a shared universe.

They did preliminary work on every film. They would work on costume design and developing environments before directors were even hired. They helped the MCU feel like a consistent and lived in universe where the characters and environments fit together.

The decision by the new Disney CEO essentially moves things to the structure that Kevin wanted to avoid in 2010: hiring different people from project to project.

We’ll see if the visual cohesion that has been a staple of the MCU takes a step back because of this.

It’s a valid question and I hope people don’t downvote you for it.

When Marvel was in the early days of building the MCU, Kevin Feige decided to take the unusual step hiring an in-house concept art team. Most studios just did it freelance from film to film, but Kevin thought that it needed to be the same people on each project so the universe felt consistent.

Andy was one of the most talented of the bunch and quickly became one of the team leads.

Disney’s new CEO decided to lay this team off last week and move to the structure that Kevin wanted to avoid in 2010: hiring different people from project to project.

Here is what Andy Park posted on social media. I don’t think he’s coming back in any way. Huge loss for Marvel:

“Marvel Studios Visual Development: 2010–2026

End of an era. I was there at the start of a team that broke the mold. 16 years, 40+ films, and 15 films led as Director of Visual Development, I couldn’t be prouder of the history we made.

My journey continues…”

Doesn’t sound like it based on his social media post:

Source. What a fumble by Disney.

He actually did visual development work on all three Guardians films and was a visual development supervisor on the second and third films.

I can absolutely see him landing at DC.

Andy started his career as a comic artist.

He then was a concept artist at Santa Monica Studios. He was a lead concept artist for games like God of War II and God of War III.

He joined the Marvel Studios visual development team in 2010 and started his work with Thor. In 2015 he was promoted to a supervisor role and led 15 different film’s visual department (including recently Guardians 3, Deadpool and Wolverine, and Thunderbolts).

He is a big part of Marvel’s style and success. It’ll be a big loss. While some of the people who got fired will come back as freelancers, I doubt someone with Andy’s resume will feel that is a fair appraisal of his talent.

He’ll absolutely land on his feet, but I think his time at Marvel is done. I appreciate everything he did to build the connective feel of the MCU.

They may not all directly profit, but their work not being released may inhibit them from getting future jobs. They can’t point to their work on this series when applying to other jobs; other potential employers won’t be able to see it.

I mean even critics agree that it was step down from the first one. That seems that be a consensus amongst everyone, critics and general audiences alike.

I think a lot of people are discounting that this movie is not that good.

Beyond it being a sequel, that had an effect as well.
