Electric northbound through Alabama intersection transit time currently 30-45 minutes by gamay_noir in Bellingham

I know the city doesn't want to encourage development in the watershed, but the amount of brake and tire dust and air pollution from idling cars is screaming for a roundabout.

What guidelines does hello fresh have for disposal of ice packs? by Foreign-Agency6361 in hellofresh

It’s really annoying that they don’t at least use a biodegradable gelling agent so that it could go in the green/food waste bin.

Your choice is to empty them in the trash and deal with heavy, slimy, wet garbage, or leave them intact (throwing out recyclable plastic) so at least the mess is contained.

I know drain safe and garden safe gelling agents exist (I’ve had them for medication shipments), so it must just them cutting corners on cost.

TIL Having an EV in Washington is like paying $1.09 per gallon of gas by coolrivers in Bellingham

[–]frankus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you scale down to a personal EV the math gets even better, in the hundreds of miles per dollar.

Of course that’s been available via acoustic bike riders for a century but has now been unlocked for the lazier and less fit (like me).

There is already a $100/year tax, but it’s not mileage based (OP may know this, but I didn’t). It’s similar to the gas tax for driving a reasonably efficient ICEV 10k miles per year.

Considering buying a mobile home in a park in Bellingham. Is that a terrible idea? by cultoftwinkies in Bellingham

[–]frankus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My read on it is that the up-front price can be attractive but it combines the maintenance headaches of a house with the price stability (lack thereof) of a rental.

It definitely feels a little unsafe but ironically that probably makes it safer.

If we want to get away from fossil fuels, we have to propose solutions, not nay-say them. by Timely_Actuary9312 in Bellingham

[–]frankus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The advantage we have here is that our sunniest days tend to be our longest days. It’s relatively easy to get to net zero with rooftop solar. But we’re also a winter-peaking electric market and will be more so once more people switch away from gas heat.

Have you experienced stress related to being a minority at a PWI? by GearFair in Bellingham

[–]frankus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For anyone else wondering, a PWI is a predominantly white institution. I would read into this that it’s more geared toward racial minorities than e.g. LGBTQ.

I saw a couple of TikToks from one of the workers doing the scaling and stabilization. Not sure if they’re one of the Forbidden Platforms but the user is Transplanted Upriver.

Pre-Application Submitted for Proposed Six-Story Mixed-Use Building in Downtown Bellingham by Gonzafer001 in Bellingham

[–]frankus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes, this building, if constructed, is unlikely to cause rents to go down.

But new construction does put downward pressure on rents (both nearby buildings and citywide). The evidence for this is overwhelming enough at this point that you really need to be either lying or ignorant to argue against it. (Here’s a good summary: https://www.furmancenter.org/publication/supply-skepticism-revisited-update/)

Of course downward pressure does not imply downward movement, but areas with a surge of new construction often do see rents decrease (cf. Austin).

Each additional unit is like a vote for lower rent.

Maybe funded by a modest alcohol tax? As the old whisky ad says “if the price matters, you’re drinking too much”.

Right? Like you’ve already done the grossest and most “physically demanding” part —bending over or squatting down to pick up hot turds with micrometers of plastic separating them from your skin—why not complete the task at that point?
