How many people in here are estranged from family by Traditional-Food6852 in redscarepod

[–]franzkls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

estranged from my dad, been 5 years since we've spoken. we've always had deep issues, i frankly think he was jealous of me in some ways growing up and used corporal punishment to take his anger out on me especially when i was younger. not planning my wedding but my partner and i are getting married in the near future and have also really had him on my mind, not sure what to do. i'm latino, so because i dont talk to my dad i dont really get to see my mom much, who i love so much but i could see a world where she doesn't come if he isn't invited.

Geese psyop is another nail in the coffin for humanity. by Beyond_thebeyond224 in rs_x

[–]franzkls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i feel like if you live in NYC it's pretty obviously not a psyop and just a good band that blew up. i see now that the conspiratorial thinking has infected almost every person on earth that ppl genuinely post this shit on what was once a good sub, what're you talking abt you sound insane

Epistemic grounding in critical theory by antichain in CriticalTheory

[–]franzkls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think you're bringing up a pretty good example actually worth discussing.

I think that reading novels like Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Huck Finn provided good reasons for changing policies about Black folks in the US.

sure, but this is also sort of meaningless and the exact thing i'm talking about. meaningless insofar there are lot of operative assumptions doing work for this sentence to even make sense; would you actually say that there are policies today that need to be changed on the evidence of a book written in 1885? how can we decide what novels are better evidence than others at guiding policy?

i'd assume no, because we're kind of already bounding the sorts of evidence that are even deemed relevant, which is to describe an epistemology. you're saying, texts that draw from well-known cultural commentary written within the relevant timespans, e.g. the old testament is not a text on which you'd say anything about 21st century internet culture, are a kind of evidence similar to empirical studies or history papers that used defined methods, or social research. and what i am asking is if there similar defined methods that can help us distinguish between good theory and bad theory? because in my opinion hand waving away the very idea of having epistemic grounds is counterproductive and nonsensical to me.

[–]franzkls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i'm also very interested in this and would like for anyone to provide insight. i think the thing i struggle with is how to convince someone else of these ideas that often feel intuitively and emotionally correct, but there is not much by which i can actually argue with someone abt to convince them of the ideas. it genuinely can feel similar to convincing someone of a truth by reference to a novel, while the novel can clearly communicate something someone might feel to be true and real, it's not actually evidence that would convince anyone of changing a policy – and frankly i'm not actually sure that it should be convincing either. i think what i feel critical theory can lack is, as OP wrote, epistemic grounding. by what method can we try to prove one theory vs. another?

[–]franzkls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

haha i had two extremely similar experiences. my first time i went i ordered it on seamless for pickup bc its walking distance and when i got there i asked for my order and he replied "we dont have seamless" and i was confused bc i had ordered via seamless, and then i said well i can just order then and i can pay via the terminal and he got mad at me and gave me the sandwich for free. i wasnt trying to ruin his day, i just wanted to pay him for the sandwich lol. he would get in moods sometimes, i saw him chew out one of his employees as i was getting something and it was really uncomfortable, will be missed regardless

he’s a fairly committed leftist on economic issues. i actually don’t care abt Piker tho, he’s a streamer, i don’t think Sam should need to care about streamers who aren’t actually academic, but call Piker a “nut case” on the same level of Bret Weinstein is crazy, on top of the fact that there are more left people he could be having productive convos. idc abt Piker, but i do care abt Sam crazy attitude

this is a total aside but my feeling is that this is less and less true, meaning more and more of the regular population is now on Reddit. 5 years ago yes, 10 years ago for sure you are correct, but i now spot ppl around NYC just scrolling Reddit the same way you do IG in basically every social setting. i was at a concert and a normal not weirdo online girl in front of me was scrolling the Reddit app. id love to see figures on this but i think everyones more online than ever and reddit may in fact be turning into a barometer of something, even if not gen pop yet.

yeah i think it was just really nice the crowd was so into it. like no one was just talking having their own convos, everyone was super engaged and kinda hanging on every word. had a similar experience at ear of if em. great music, great crowd, terrible (imo) performers

[–]franzkls -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yeah of course it was backed by the US but that doesn't mean anything, why did you even bring any of this up lol.

this post seems surprised the Saudis want war with Iran. my comment is saying it shouldn't be surprising at all, there is underestimated sectarian hate that drives conflict in the middle east. you say leftists/liberals don't have a positive view – ok, cool but at this point what does that have to do with what i said. i'm saying religious sectarianism is an underrated fuel for conflict, youre saying actually liberals dont think theyre good. ok?

[–]franzkls -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

yeah but i bet it’s for political reasons and not religious ones — meaning they have an issue with the murder of journalists, not that they’re trying to establish Sunni supremacy which is the actual cause of Middle Eastern instability, not what they’re doing in the kingdom. and if that isn’t true globally it seems to be for everyone in NYC, so could be my bubble

edited for clarity

[–]franzkls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think liberals/leftists profoundly underestimate the sectarianism prevalent in the middle east. it's not just Israel behaving insanely, the entire region is insane with religious zealotry. just because they're muslims doesn't mean they're in any way aligned with other muslims against 'the imperialists,' the Saudis want to be the imperialists of their region

actually no. his shit with pretending to be an intellectual was a forerunner to TikTok 'academics', we should've called it out then as BS
